There are numerous ways to upgrade gear in Path of Exile 2. Orb of Transmutation and Orb of Augmentation are a good combination when you’re still starting out. If you have a good supply, you can apply a Regal Orb after using the aforementioned currencies. Then, you finish that off with Exalted Orbs to fill up the remaining affix slots.
However, there is one PoE 2 Currency that you can use that gives you several modifiers right off the bat. This is the Orb of Alchemy, of course, which should be familiar to those who have played Path of Exile 1.

What is the Orb of Alchemy
Do you see that item above? That is a normal item in Path of Exile 2. Such an item does not contain any modifiers whatsoever. Now, contrast that with the item you can see in the image below:
The gloves in the second picture now have four different modifiers and a noticeably majestic yellow text and border to match. This has been created using a type of currency called the Orb of Alchemy.
The typical Transmutation, Augmentation, and Regal Orb combo is a pain because all three only result in an item with the same number of modifiers as the currencies used. With the PoE 2 Orb of Alchemy, you simply utilize this one currency to turn a normal lowly item into a possible god-tier item with several mods on it!
Thanks to the Alchemy Orb, all you need to do to finish a crafting project is apply Exalted Orbs twice! This is because a rare item in Path of Exile 2 can have a maximum of six modifiers.
How to Use the Orb of Alchemy
If you’ve already used PoE 2 Exalted Orbs to craft gear before, then the Alchemy Orb is no different. You simply get a piece of gear that you want to craft, right-click on the Orb of Alchemy, and then hover your mouse on that item and click.
The Orb of Alchemy also works on Waystones. In fact, we recommend that you utilize this on Tier 14 and Tier 15 Waystones to get the most out of them!
It should go without saying that the items you want to upgrade must be of normal rarity. For reference, a normal item in PoE 2 has that ordinary white-colored text and border, which is a far cry from the good looks of a rare item.
How to Get Orb of Alchemy
The Alchemy Orb is powerful when it comes to crafting gear and upgrading Waystones. However, unlike other PoE 2 currencies like the Armourer’s Scrap, Blacksmith’s Whetstone, and Artificer’s Orb where you can just salvage gear, the Orb of Alchemy cannot be acquired this way. Instead, you obtain it as a random drop by eliminating monsters or opening chests.
This is in stark contrast to what it was in PoE 1. In the prequel, you can sell items to vendors to get Alchemy Shards. Although you need 20 shards to create a full Alchemy Orb, it is still possible to get one just by selling trash items to NPCs.
It is unclear why GGG doesn’t let you get Alchemy Orbs this way in Path of Exile 2. The Orb of Transmutation, Regal Orb, Artificer’s Orb, and even the Orb of Chance have shards that you can obtain from disenchanting items. Will this change and finally allow you to obtain Orb of Alchemy from shards in the PoE 2 full release? We really hope so!
For now, you have to make do by farming diligently and making sure that you open any chest that you can find. If you have extra Exalted Orbs lying around and you need to get your hands on some Alchemy Orbs, you can head to the Currency Exchange by talking to Alva.

Are you struggling to get the Orb of Alchemy in Path of Exile 2? Well, here are some tips to help you obtain more:
Never Overlook Chests
Treasure chests in PoE 2 are actually more valuable than in Path of Exile 1 and that is no exaggeration. In fact, some players shared their experience of getting a Divine Orb just by opening a seemingly ordinary chest in maps. So the next time you see a chest, no matter how ordinary-looking it is, don’t forget to open it!
Farm Early Maps
If you are new to Path of Exile 2, you have to remember that the more difficult the content you are running, the more rewarding it is. That said, maps will always be more challenging to complete than the campaign, especially if you use a high-tier Waystone with modifiers that are difficult to address with your build.
To get more Orb of Alchemy, you can farm T1 to T5 Waystones until you get stronger. Once you are able to finish maps in under several minutes, you can gradually increase the waystone tier. Take map-clearing efficiency as a gauge to let you know when you should upgrade to the next tier.
In Tier 10 maps and above, Alchemy Orbs begin to drop more frequently. Do not forget to upgrade your Waystones with Transmutes, Augments, and Regals.
Slowly Add More Content to Your Maps
When you are geared enough that you can run high-tier Waystones without a problem, you can begin adding more content as you see fit. One way you can do this is by inserting the appropriate Precursor Tablets into Lost Towers. The one we recommend the most is the Breach Precursor Tablet because Breach lets you fight against multiple waves of monsters, giving you a higher chance of gaining an Orb of Alchemy.
Bosses in PoE 2 give more rewards than a regular map boss in the original game. If your build can take on bosses without dying, you can use the Overseer Precursor Tablet, which is a new item introduced in Patch 0.1.1 that forces map bosses to appear in maps surrounding a Lost Tower. So, you’ve reached a point where you can comfortably farm T15s with a map boss, what next? If you are a glutton for punishment and would like to add more excitement to your maps, you can instill your Waystones using Distilled Emotions. These are currency items in Path of Exile 2 that you can get from Delirium.
That said, you do not have to use the more high-end Distilled Emotions like Distilled Isolation and Distilled Suffering; Distilled Ire, Guilt, and Greed will suffice.
Increase Item Quantity
When you are trying to farm any currency item in Path of Exile 2, always improve item quantity in any way possible. You can do this by taking the right Atlas Passive Skills, upgrading your Waystones, and using the appropriate Precursor Tablets.
Take note that the Precursor Tablets can only be upgraded with Orb of Transmutation and Orb of Augmentation, which means that they cannot be turned into rares with a Regal Orb or Orb of Alchemy. Still, you can get some item quantity just by doing this one simple upgrade.
Trade for Alchemy Orbs
While you can conveniently purchase currency items from the Currency Exchange in the game, it is possible that you’re not getting the best prices from there. Although it is a bit more cumbersome, it’s still recommended to trade with other players. Who knows, you might get a better deal!
