With the last summer summit Jagex revealed a pretty exciting update called “Project Zanaris.” In short, this project will allow players to create and customize their own OSRS private servers. If you want to read more on this subject, you can check out our blog post on it by clicking here!
Project Zanaris October Update
Since their initial post, they have been developing both the Server Creation screen and the player lists. You can think of the server creation screen as your character customization screen. This interface will allow you to customize your server and world according to your desires.
This interface will be available using the Jagex Launcher and selecting Project Zanaris. If you are a server host, you will be able to customize your rules anytime you want to.
The player list, on the other hand, will show who and how many people are playing on that server. With this in mind, let's talk about some various parameters that you can interact with to make your server unique.
Character Parameters
Character creation will include different account modes, like the Ironman modes or other popular mods you might have seen on YouTube, like the nightmare mode by Settled.
This section of the settings will enable you to mark all quests as complete and will likely offer options to toggle various time-consuming accomplishments as either completed or not completed.
You will also be able to start with whatever equipment you please. A private server wouldn't do without this feature!
World Parameters
Death Mechanics
You can begin by customizing the death mechanics of your server. For instance, you might want to implement a system similar to Deadman Mode, where players lose certain items from their bank upon death. Alternatively, you could choose to have all items completely vanish when a player dies.
Another way to customize the death mechanics on your server is by implementing experience loss upon death. This feature allows you to decide how much experience players will lose when they die. For example, you could set a fixed loss of 100,000 experience points each time a player meets their demise. Alternatively, you might prefer a percentage-based system, where players lose a certain percentage of their total experience, adding a layer of risk with each death. If you're feeling particularly punitive, you even have the option to completely wipe all experience from a specific skill, forcing players to start over in their progression. This kind of customization can create a more intense atmosphere and heighten the stakes for every encounter.
Another parameter you can tweak involves "resetting" a player's save file upon death. Imagine the thrill (or despair) of having players sent back to Tutorial Island if they fall in battle! This kind of reset not only adds a significant challenge but also turns every decision into a life-or-death scenario. By default, this option will only count unsafe deaths as resets, but if you want to, you can make all deaths unsafe.
With all these options available to you, the level of difficulty and intensity you wish to introduce is entirely in your hands. You can craft a server that challenges even the most seasoned players, making every moment feel crucial and every decision weigh heavily on their success. So, whether you want to create a brutal survival experience or a more forgiving environment, you have the tools to make your server as hardcore as you desire!
Banking
First and foremost, if you want to torture yourself and your players you can disable banking. This will make everyone who is playing on the server an Ultimate Ironman. However, they will still be able to trade with other players. Thank god for that…
Disabling Coins
Just like the title suggests, you can disable the use of gold and platinum on your server. Just like ancient human civilizations without any money, you and your players will be forced to trade using only osrs items. This could be fascinating for a server.
Disabling Picking Up Ground Items
This parameter will prevent players from picking up ground items, just like any ironman account. Given that players will not be actual ironmen, this could be fascinating.
Disabling Equipment Slots
This is another sadistic parameter for all you challenge enjoyers. With this parameter, you can turn off one or any number of equipment slots. This will prevent players from using items altogether and will make boss or mob encounters much more interesting.
Disabling Resource Spawns
This parameter isn't really aimed at accommodating a large player base, but if you're seeking a real challenge, it will definitely meet your needs. By enabling this mode, you'll disable the respawn of resource-gathering nodes. That means any tree you chop down or rock you mine will be permanently removed from your world. Imagine the weight of every decision as you venture out to gather materials—each swing of your axe or strike with your pickaxe becomes a crucial choice.
With resources becoming finite, you'll need to strategize and plan your actions meticulously. You can't afford to waste the valuable resources at your disposal. This mode encourages players to think critically about how to utilize their materials efficiently and consider the long-term impact of their actions. You'll find yourself weighing the benefits of gathering versus conserving, making every decision count.
In a world where every resource is precious, the gameplay experience transforms dramatically. It forces you to adopt a more careful and strategic mindset, ensuring that every action you take aligns with your long-term goals. So, if you're ready for a challenge that tests your resource management skills and survival instincts, this mode could be exactly what you're looking for!
Well, this is it for this update. As you can see with Project Zanaris, there will be a lot of ways to create unique experiences for yourself and for other people. You can adjust the difficulty and intensity of your server as you please. Follow our blog to always be up-to-date with all things Runescape!
