OSRS Prayer Gear Guide

Game Guides , Runescape
When it comes to combat in OSRS, a lot of players tend to focus solely on their melee, ranged, and magic skills. However, Prayer is just as - if not more important than any of these skills. If you want to make sure that you're well protected in the game, then this is definitely one of the skills worth investing in.
What Is OSRS Prayer?
This is a combat skill that's accessible by all members of the game. Rising through the ranks in your Prayer skill will give you access to a variety of abilities that aid you in combat. Such abilities include boosting your Attack, making you immune to certain types of damage, added health regeneration, and more.
Unlike Magic in the game, Prayers are going to be active constantly once you activate them. They'll only stop once your Prayer Points are completely drained or if you manually stop using the Prayer. The Prayers you can use and the amount of Prayer Points you have is affected by your current Prayer level which is why picking the right gear is essential.
There aren't a lot of builds in OSRS that are mainly focused on improving your Prayer Skill but if you really want to get the most out of this Skill in the game, you'll need to find the right gear that helps maximize your Praying capabilities.
If you are looking to level up your Prayer skill but not sure how to do it, you can check out our comprehensive guide on getting 99 Prayer by clicking here!
How Do Prayer Items Work
Much like items with bonuses to other skills, there are some items that help boost Prayer as well. Prayer bonus makes a 3.33% decrease in the amount your points deplete for every bonus Prayer point. What this essentially means is that the higher Prayer bonus points you have the longer your Prayers are going to last.
To put it into perspective, if you have a 15+ Prayer bonus, your Prayers are going to last 50% longer, while a 30+ bonus means it will last twice as long. If it lasts twice as long, Prayers that drain 1 point every 3 seconds, and will only deplete 1 point every 6 seconds. As of this writing, the highest Prayer bonus is 73 which triples the duration of your prayers. The table below shows a simple calculation that shows how long a Prayer will last if at its base, it lasts 6 seconds before it drains all of your Prayer Points.
Prayer Bonus | % Increase in Prayer Duration | Duration with 6s Base (seconds) |
0 | 0% | 6 |
5 | 16.67% longer | 7 |
10 | 33.33% longer | 8 |
15 | 50% longer | 9 |
20 | 66.67% longer | 10 |
25 | 83.33% longer | 11 |
30 | 100% longer | 12 |
40 | 150% longer | 15 |
50 | 200% longer | 18 |
60 | 250% longer | 21 |
70 | 300% longer | 24 |
73 | 333.33% longer | 26 |
At max Prayer bonus, here's how long it takes Prayers to drain a single point.
Best Prayer Items In OSRS
While there are many prayer items in OSRS, there are a few standout items that we really recommend getting. Aside from having high Prayer bonuses, these items are also loved for the other stat gains they give to you. They are perfect for many situations but if you want to max out your Prayer skill while balancing out your other combat stats, these are a must-have.
- Holy Wrench
For the very first item, we're going to choose one that doesn't give any Prayer bonuses but is essential nonetheless. The Holy Wrench will help you gain additional Prayer Points whenever you consume an item that restores your Prayer points. Those include prayer potions, super restore potions, Sanfew serums, and prayer potions. However, it doesn't work with moonlight moths. To be more specific, it adds a 2% restore on top of what's actually provided to you.
Aside from that, you can use this item to imbue your ring of the gods, which in itself is an amazing item but more on this later.
To get this item, you'll have to beat the Rum Deal quest which you can start by talking to Pirate Pete in Port Phasmatys. The quest itself is relatively easy so you should hurry up and get this item whenever you can. If you secure one for yourself but somehow lose it, you can talk to Davey in Braindeath Island for another copy. However, you won't be given another Holy Wrench if another one is in your bank or inventory.
- Croziers
If you're looking for a decent Magic weapon to go along with your Prayer build, then you should look no further than Croziers. All Croziers provide a Prayer bonus of 6 and to top it all off, they also have the ability to let you autocast spells that are on the standard spellbook. Each of the Croziers available in the game are aligned with different gods but don't worry, you don't have to fight any of them to get a Crozier.
You can get these staves by doing medium or hard Treasure Trails. The chances are very low though but if you're looking for a good Prayer-enhancing weapon, Croziers are the way to go.

- Ring of the Gods (i)
There are a few rings in OSRS that provide a decent Prayer bonus but none are as powerful as the Ring of the Gods (i). Provides a whopping +8 to your Prayer which is the highest among all the other rings in the game. On top of that, you're getting a +1 defense bonus for all combat stats too. The only problem with this ring is that it's not easy to get.
To get the basic version of the Ring of the Gods, you'll have to get it as a drop reward from Vet'ion or Calvar'ion. Both are bosses that you can find within the Wilderness area so you're dealing with many threats, the enemies in the area, the bosses themselves, and other players too.
To make matters worse, the Ring of the Gods has an abysmal drop rate for both bosses. Vet'ion has a 1/512 chance while Calvar'ion has a 1/716 chance. With the major difference in the drop chance, it's safe to say that you're better off taking your chances with Vet'ion over Calvar'ion.
Once you've acquired the ring, the next step is to imbue it from the Nightmare Zone. It will cost 650,000 reward points or only half of it if you have the hard tier of Combat Achievements activated, You can also imbue it using the scroll of imbuing, or by purchasing it with 260 Zeal Tokens. If you're going to imbue the Ring of the Gods, you'll need a Holy Wrench.
- Holy Wraps
Believe it or not, of all the gloves in OSRS, only a few including the Holy Wraps have the privilege of coming with a Prayer bonus. In fact, there are only three gloves in the game that have this special perk and the Holy Wraps provide the highest of them all. Players who want to maximize their Prayer bonus should always have this in hand.
Another unique perk of this item is that it's counted as a Saradomin item. That said, you can bring this inside the God Wars Dungeon or the Hallowed Sepulchre. What makes it even better is that it only requires a Prayer level of 31 so it's something that you can benefit from early on in the game.
The only downside of the Holy Wraps is that it's a particularly hard item to get. You can only get this from elite Treasure Trails challenges and it has a 1 in 1100 chance of being a reward. If you want to get this for your Prayer build, you need to start moving fast as it will take a lot of effort and luck to pull this from the rewards.
- Holy Sandals/Devout Boots
What better way to battle in style than by making sure that your gear is in the same theme as others. The Holy Sandals are essentially the boots equivalent of the Holy Wraps, seeing that they both add +3 to your Prayer Bonus. Like the Holy Wraps, you can bring this inside the God Wars Dungeon or the Hallowed Sepulchre and you can use it to turn bandits hostile too.
The good thing about the Holy Sandals is that getting it isn't too hard. You only need to complete medium Treasure Trails for this and the drop rate is also abysmal. Still, it's good that the process towards getting it is significantly easier.
Once you get the drake's tooth, you can then use it to upgrade your Holy Sandals into Devout Boots for an even higher Prayer Bonus. The Prayer Requirement jumps to level 60 though.
- Proselyte Armour
This armour can be purchased and used after the completion of the quest “The Slug Menace”. This used to be the best in slot prayer armour in the game now it resides in 2nd place. This armour is extremely cheap and only requires level 30 Defence and level 20 Prayer to use, so it is a great alternative to the sunfire fanatic armour.
- Holy Symbol
There are a few amulets in the game that provide a Prayer Bonus and the Holy Symbol is only the third best. The other two are the god stoles and the dragonbone necklace. What makes this a great item to have is that it's actually very easy to get. You can get it during your early or mid-game experience.
For starters, you'll need to have an unblessed symbol with you. To create this, you'll need to craft it using a ball of wool and an unstrung symbol. The unblessed symbol is relatively useless at this point but you'll need to have it blessed to make it something more useful.
Once you have the Unblessed Symbol, go to the second floor of Edgeville Monastery and talk to Brother Jered. To gain access to him however, you'll need a Prayer level of 31 first. Alternatively, you can bless the symbol on your own using a holy book or book of balance but at that point, it's much easier to have Brother Jered bless it instead. While you're in Edgeville Monastery, make sure to get the monk's robes as well. The monk's robes are the best F2P prayer set you can find. There are no other gear for F2P with the same stats.
Aside from its substantial Prayer bonus, a Holy Symbol also decreases the chances of healing taken by vampyres when they attack you. This is going to make fights against them significantly easier.
- Dragonbone Necklace
This necklace is a drop from Vorkath. It is the best necklace that you can get in terms of Prayer bonus. It also provides the same offensive and defensive bonuses as an amulet of glory. Also while you are wearing this necklace, burying bones will restore your prayer points. This effect does not stack with the effect that is present in Catacombs of Kourend.
You can also further upgrade this necklace into a bonecrusher one to automatically crush your bones.
- God Book
There are many options you can pick for your off-hand equipment but if you want a more offensive approach to your Prayer build, we highly suggest going for one of the God Books. These offer some of the best Prayer bonuses for off-hand gear, on top of their many combat bonuses as well. The journey towards getting one can be long however.
To get the book, you'll first have to beat the Dagannoth Mother during the Horror from the Deep quest. Once done, you'll get a Rusty Casket which you'll then have to give to Jossik. You'll then have to choose from one of the three main gods. Make sure to pick well as you'll get specific combat bonuses for your God book depending on who you choose.
The journey doesn't end there however. You'll then have to get torn pages 1-4 either from Treasure Trails or from trading with another player. Again, you'll have to get four unique torn pages. Once all torn pages are added to the book, it will transform into a specific God Book depending on which good you choose upon talking to Jossik. You can have all versions of the God Book but you'll have to collect all torn pages again and again for them. If you're having poor luck with Treasure Trails, then trading with another player is definitely the best method to earn more pages.
In case you lose your God book, you simply need to return to Jossik and ask for another copy. The books will be in their upgraded form already.

- Sunfire Fanatic Armour Set
Just last month, OSRS had a major content drop that added lots of things to the game. One of those is the Fortis Colosseum. You can get a ton of great rewards for beating it but the best for those who want to maximize their Prayer has to be the Sunfire Fanatic set. You can get this as a reward for beating the colosseum via a rewards chest. The good news is that before you get any duplicate pieces of the Sunfire Fanatic set, you'll get each of the three armor pieces first.
Wearing a complete set gives you a whopping 24 Prayer bonus, on top of its other great defensive bonuses. This is the best armor set for Prayer hopefuls in the game but unfortunately, the Fortis Colosseum isn't an easy challenge to overcome. You'll have to go through numerous waves of enemies before ultimately facing off against a tough boss named Sol heredit. If you are looking to engage and complete the Fortis Colosseum you can check out our guide on it as a start by clicking here!

Best Prayer Gear Setup
Now, let's talk about the best gear setups with Prayer in mind. There's no build for OSRS that's solely focused on Prayer boosting because that means you'll be sacrificing your combat skills, which is counterproductive. The key is to create a build that provides the most Prayer bonus possible while giving you excellent levels for different attack styles. Here are two builds for P2P and F2P accounts. These two builds are obviously far from having the same stats.
Best P2P Prayer Armour Setup OSRS
This F2P Prayer Setup is very expensive and unfortunately, there's no workaround to it. This F2P build is very expensive and will take a lot of time to fully complete. All of your efforts are going to be worth it though as what you get in return is the highest Prayer bonus possible.
Slot | Item | Prayer bonus | Notes |
Head | Sunfire fanatic helm | +6 | High Prayer and Defense requirements (both non-boostable). Must have Prayer at 60 and Defense at 40. Requires investment but still worth getting. |
Neck | Dragonbone necklace | +12 | Has a steep requirement of 70 Prayer. An alternative is the Bonecrusher necklace with the same effects and requirements. It can also be used as a Bonecrusher, so both are interchangeable. |
Body | Sunfire fanatic cuirass | +10 | High Prayer and Defense requirements (both non-boostable). Must have Prayer at 60 and Defense at 40. Requires investment but still worth getting. |
Legs | Sunfire fanatic chausses | +8 | High Prayer and Defense requirements (both non-boostable). Must have Prayer at 60 and Defense at 40. Requires investment but still worth getting. |
Boots | Devout boots | +5 | You must have 60 Prayer to wear this. |
Cape | Soul cape | +8 | You must have 60 Prayer to wear this. |
Off-Hand | Any god book | +5 | You'll need to finish the Horror from the Deep quest to access any God Book. If you don't have one, you can use a Broodoo Shield, but it has a higher requirement of 25 Magic and 25 Defense. Another alternative is the Falador Shield 4, which has the same bonus but takes longer to obtain, requiring the completion of the Elite Falador Diary. |
Hands | Holy wraps | +3 | You can replace this with Blessed Vambraces or White Gloves, but both items only give +1 to Prayer. Another alternative is the Tormented Gloves with +2 Prayer, but they require 75 Hitpoints. |
Ring | Ring of the gods (i) | +8 | In its base form, the Ring of the Gods gives +4 Prayer, which is still higher than all other rings in the game. It's on the same level as the Ring of Suffering (i). The imbued version offers a +8 bonus, the highest for any ring, along with a higher defense bonus. However, the effects of the Holy Wrench are nullified when this is equipped. |
Weapon | Any crozier | +6 | You'll need 60 Prayer to wield any of the Croziers in the game, but they're excellent for most combat prayer builds due to autocast. For melee, consider the Void Knight Mace, which offers the same bonus but has steeper requirements, including 42 Attack, 22 Prayer, Strength, Hitpoints, Defense, Ranged, and Magic, plus 250 Commendation points. |
Ammunition | Rada's blessing 4 | +2 | You'll need to complete the elite Kourend and Kebos Diary for this, making it difficult to obtain. |
Best F2P Prayer Armour Setup OSRS
The game isn't very generous when it comes to F2P players creating a Prayer setup for their character. If you really want to make ends meet, the best you can get to is a bonus of +25 which doesn't even double the duration of your Prayers. Still, this is a pretty good build that can help you through most of what the game's free version has to offer.
Slot | Item | Prayer bonus | Notes |
Head | God full helm | +1 | Requires Defense level 40. Includes Guthix, Zamorak, and Saradomin helmets, all offering the same requirements and bonuses. |
Neck | Holy symbol | +8 | Bring an unblessed symbol to Brother Jered on the second floor of Edgeville Monastery. Requires level 31 Prayer. Alternatively, use an Amulet of Power with low requirements but only +1 Prayer bonus. |
Body | Monk's robe top | +6 | Available for free on the second floor of Edgeville Monastery once you have level 31 Prayer. Can be collected while blessing an unblessed symbol. |
Legs | Monk's robe bottom | +5 | Available for free on the second floor of Edgeville Monastery once you have level 31 Prayer. Can be collected while blessing an unblessed symbol. |
Off-hand | God kiteshield | +1 | Requires Defense level 40. Includes Guthix, Zamorak, and Saradomin kiteshields, all offering the same requirements and bonuses. |
Weapon | Rune mace | +4 | Requires level 40 Attack to use. |
