Game Guides , Runescape
A common misconception when it comes to OSRS is that it's all about swords, bows, and magic. In reality, there's a lot more to do in the game and you're free to learn every artisan Skill and combat Skill in the game that you want. It might seem mundane but you shouldn't ever forget about Firemaking.
Despite seeming like a useless Skill, Firemaking is actually a good Skill to master in the game. Getting it to high levels, or even to 99 is going to be beneficial for you and your character in the long run. But of course, getting to 99 Firemaking is a lot easier said than done so we'll help you out.
What is OSRS Firemaking?
In OSRS, Firemaking is a Skill used to light fires, simply put. It's an artisan Skill that serves as a companion to Woodcutting. While it doesn't do a lot in terms of usage, it's required for many quests and minigames that are otherwise rewarding to the player. For instance, quests like Recipe for Disaster and Desert Treasure I all come with amazing rewards but completing them requires certain Firemaking levels.
Aside from being a prerequisite in some quests, Firemaking also lets you light logs to use for cooking food just about anywhere. The ashes left from Firemaking can also be used to train Herblore as well. Lastly, there are a lot of money-making techniques that revolve around using Firemaking.
Firemaking requires time and effort to get to 99. The good thing is that you can train Firemaking along with other Skills so that time you'll spend will be more than worth it.
How To Start A Fire In OSRS
There are a few ways to start your own fire in OSRS and it's a vital skill to learn how each one works.
- With a tinderbox - This is by far the easiest way to start a fire in OSRS. You'll need to have a tinderbox. These get destroyed upon use and it's always advisable to have some of these when going out. Here are a list of sources for tinderboxes:

- With a log: Drop a log from your inventory or chop down a tree in any forest. Once the log is on the floor, you can light the log to make a fire as long as you have a fire source..
- With a bow: There are some bows that you can use to set fire to logs. However, this method is only exclusive to those who've done the Firemaking section of Barbarian training. This is a quick and efficient way to light logs.
Regardless of how you light a fire, the mechanic remains the same once it's lit. Your character will move one step west of the fire. If there's no space in that area, you'll step east, south, and then north. Knowing this mechanic matters as it will help you light fires more efficiently for training.
This is best done in open areas such as the Grand Exchange. To do it, line up the logs in a way that there's always a space to the west. If you light one log, you'll automatically move to the next log. Light that next and continue doing this until you run out of a fire source or logs. This minimizes the effort on your end.
However, keep in mind that fires require an empty space on the ground to be lit. Certain locations and objects, like buildings, plants, ferns, adjacent growing vines, and doorways, may restrict the creation of fires. Closed doors generally block fire creation, except in places like Draynor. Open doors, on the other hand, don't prevent Firemaking.
OSRS Firemaking Level 1-99 Guide
Firemaking is an easy Skill to level up whether you're on an F2P or P2P account. You can save Firemaking as one of the last Skills to level up but you can still focus on this first if you're going for Woodcutting anyways. Although it's easy enough already, let's make it easier with this optimized and efficient guide for Firemaking training.
OSRS Firemaking F2P Leveling Guide
Firemaking training on a F2P account is relatively easy but it does take a lot of time. To do it, you'll basically need to burn the highest-tier log possible for your current level. In hindsight, this seems simple enough but there are other things that you should take note of to make the process easier.
What's great about Firemaking training is that, unlike other training methods, you can do this in one place given that you already have the logs to start training with. You can first start by gathering as many logs as you can. Alternatively, you can buy logs from the Grand Exchange but this will cost you. By procuring your own logs, you can start leveling up your Woodcutting skill as well.
Once done, head to the east of the Grand Exchange. Lay your logs one square apart in a straight line. Start burning the logs from the easternmost part of the line. By doing this, your character will automatically move to the left, and from there, you can just do a few clicks to ignite the next log. This doesn't just make the process easier, it makes it much faster as well as you get to save a few seconds in between.
Another way to simplify this process is by having 2 noted logs with you at all times. You can use them on any banker in the Grand Exchange but this is only possible if you're at least 2 steps away from them. It takes some practice but you can basically set fire to logs at 3 game ticks. At maximum efficiency, you can burn 1,500 logs per hour.
The tip above is good as you can effectively cut the entire process by adding more logs. If you can't handle or master the steps to do it because it's complexity, there's an alternative. Use the Varrock Teleport and from where you land, set up logs from east to west. Start by setting fire to the logs at the fountain and do this until you end up at the Varrock west bank. It's more work but it's a lot easier.
As you progress, you'll change up the types of logs that you're using. We'll list a table of the logs you're going to use for F2P accounts below. Do take note that the time listed below here won't take into account the time it takes to farm for the logs if you don't intend on buying them.
Firemaking Level | Type of Log | Leveling Data | Additional Notes |
Level 1-15 | 61 Normal Logs |
| If you're in the early game, we highly suggest farming for normal logs instead. They're found in evergreen, dead, and dying trees located around Lumbridge and the Wilderness. This is also the perfect opportunity to start training your Woodcutting skills. If you really want to cut the process short, just buy logs instead. |
Level 15-30 | 83 Oak Logs |
| Like Normal logs, these are very easy to obtain but you can only get them if you have level 15 Woodcutting. If you farmed the normal logs from before, then you probably have enough XP to start getting oak logs. Again, just buy it if you don't want to waste time. |
Level 30-45 | 535 Willow Logs |
| Willow logs are located near Edgeville, River Lum, the southern portion of Draynor Village Back, and in Rimmington. There's also a cabbage patch located northwest of Draynor. All locations for Willow logs are relatively safe to farm in so don't worry too much. |
Level 45-60 | 1,572 Maple Logs |
| At this point, farming for the logs on your own isn't going to be practical as you'll have to constantly look for them and wait for the trees to respawn. As such, it's highly advisable to buy them from others instead. If you're a free to play player, the only location to farm maple logs is on the Corsair Cove Resource Area. |
Level 60-99 | 63,016 Yew Logs |
| As costly as it is, Yew logs are best bought rather than getting them on your own. The good news is that if you're planning to farm for your own yew logs, you can do so in various players even on a free account. Some of the locations include:

OSRS Firemaking P2P Leveling Guide
Leveling your Firemaking on a P2P account remains relatively the same but it's much faster and more streamlined. The journey is long but way faster as compared to training on a F2P account.
Level 1-30: Pyre Logs
Levels 1 to 30 are going to go by quickly. You can opt to burn normal logs and oak logs like in the steps above but that would require farming for logs or securing them first. Making pyre logs are the best option if you want to do it without spending too much time or money.
To do this, you'll first have to finish Shades of Mort'ton. You can start this quest by inspecting the Diary of Herbi Flax which is located on a shelf in one of the houses on Morytania. The quest has an intermediate difficulty but it isn't that long. The quest gives you access to the Sacred Oil which is required for creating Pyre Logs.
This activity gives you access to all sorts of logs even if you're at a lower level. The only downside to this is that there's a chance for the process to fail and if you're unlucky, you can fail again and again while doing the task. On the other hand, the speed of this process is dependent on how fast you can click. A good way to exploit this is by using mouse clicker software which can automatically multiply the amount of clicks you make when clicking your mouse a single time.
It's not just about click speed as you need to be very accurate as well. This isn't that impactful but you need to be precise a bit. At average productivity, you can get as much as 45,000 XP per hour. By this calculation, we mean that you're able to create at least one log per in-game tick. If you're hands don't get tired quickly and if you can click fast, you can do as much as 65,000 XP per hour.
This method is also going to give you a few golds along the way. While the money earned isn't that big, it's still change in your pocket at the end of the day.
As a guide, we're presenting a table that shows a few details including how much oil you need, how much XP you need, and a few other important details. It's worth noting that the XP for Firemaking isn't calculated in how much pyre logs you produce. Instead, it depends on how much oil you use during the process. Ideally, you'd want to use as much oil per log as possible to maximize your XP gain.
Input | Output logs | Profit | Firemaking XP | GP/XP | |||
Logs | Oil doses | ||||||
Regular | 73 | 980 | Regular pyre | 1,320 | 267 | 10 | 26.70 |

Level 30-99: Burning Logs
From Level 30 onwards, the fastest way to gain Firemaking experience is by burning the highest-tier log available. Although logs can be burned from level 1, creating pyre logs offers slightly faster experience due to the high chance of failing to light regular logs. However, burning logs remains a viable, lower-effort alternative to creating pyre logs.
This process is pretty much the same as in the F2P guide. For a better look at your progress, here's a table that assumes you're able to burn 1,485 logs per hour.
Levels | Log type | Experience | XP/HR | Logs needed | Log price | Money spent | GP/XP |
1-15 | Normal | 40 | 59,400 | 61 | 73 | -4,453 | -1.83 |

OSRS Quests That Reward Firemaking XP
If you're sick and tired of burning logs, don't forget that there are also a few quests that reward you with Firemaking XP. There aren't a lot compared to quests that reward XP for other Skills but these offer a good change of pace compared to regular leveling techniques.

How To Get The Firemaking Cape
Your reward for maxing your Firemaking Skill isn't just bragging rights and specific rewards from quests. As with the rest of the Skills in the game, you can get a special cape for maxing out Firemaking. The Firemaking Cape costs 99,000 coins and you can pair it with the Firemaking Hood as well. Once you reach 99, head to Ignatius Vulcan in an area south of Seers' Village.
If you're a completionist or if you're simply hoping to max out your character, then this alone should be a good enough reward to work for. Getting to 99 in Firemaking can take a few hours however but you at least have a few tricks up your sleeves now.
The Firemaking cape, like all skill capes, provides a substantial defensive boost of +9 to all defensive stats. Additionally, if a player has achieved level 99 in a second skill, the cape is automatically trimmed, giving it a +4 bonus to prayer.
Aside from being really neat to look at, the Firemaking cape is also quite handy as it can serve as a light source that doesn't get put out. This is possible whether you have it in your inventory or if you have it equipped. With this, you'll save lots of money when it comes to creating light sources.
Moreover, the Firemaking cape serves as warm clothing when facing the icy challenges of Wintertodt, providing much-needed comfort in cold environments.
Just like other Capes of Accomplishment, you can hang the cape on a rack in your very own costume room. This doesn't do anything other than display the cape and the hood for all to see. It's important to note that Ultimate Ironmen will need to store the entire set before being able to retrieve individual pieces from the costume room.
How to Participate in Wintertodt
When you venture to the Wintertodt, you'll find a unique boss-like challenge that sets itself apart from the typical combat encounters in OSRS. Located in the Northern Tundras within Great Kourend, this formidable entity ushers in unending winter and bone-chilling cold. As mysterious as it is menacing, the true nature of the Wintertodt remains veiled in secrecy, yet its uncanny ability to plunge the land into an icy abyss has earned it a notorious reputation among the people of Great Kourend.
Traditional weaponry and combat skills won't suffice against the Wintertodt. Instead, you are called upon to assist the pyromancers, a specialized group of Arceuus mages, in their unceasing battle against this elemental colossus. These pyromancers, entrusted with the sacred flame's protection, wield the incantations necessary to quell the Wintertodt's wrath. The fate of Great Kourend rests on their shoulders, and their unique magical abilities are indispensable. Nevertheless, their expertise is confined to controlling flames and frost, leaving gaps in other areas. It is your duty, as a seasoned adventurer, to complement their skills.
To participate in the efforts against the Wintertodt, you must possess a Firemaking skill level of at least 50. Importantly, you don't need to pledge allegiance to any of Great Kourend's cities to join this mission.
Reward for Completing Wintertodt
Your rewards for vanquishing the Wintertodt are directly linked to the reward points you amass during the battle. To earn your well-deserved spoils, you must accumulate a minimum of 500 points.
The fruits of your labor will take the form of a supply crate and an allocation of Firemaking experience, specifically 100 times your current Firemaking level. When you crack open the supply crate, you'll find a minimum of two items from the rewards table. If you've surpassed the 500-point threshold, your excess points contribute to additional rolls for rewards. A bonus roll is guaranteed for every 500 points you exceed the minimum requirement. The remaining x points offer an x/500 chance of securing an extra reward roll. For instance, amassing 1,200 points will grant you either three rolls (a 60% chance) or four rolls (a 40% chance).
The more effort you invest during the battle, the more rewards you'll reap. Here are the activities that will help you earn those valuable reward points:
Activity | Skill involved | Points |
Lighting braziers | Firemaking | 25 |
Adding Bruma roots to a brazier | Woodcuting /Firemaking | 10 |
Adding Bruma kindling to a brazier | Woodcutting/Fletching /Firemaking | 25 |
Repairing destroyed braziers | Construction | 25 |
Healing pyromancers | Farming /Herblore | 30 |
Let The Fire Burn!
As simple as it seems, the OSRS Firemaking Skill is still important to have as it grants access to some amazing items in the game. If you want to make sure that you're able to get the most out of every Skill in the game, don't be afraid and lazy toward getting this seemingly mundane but actually important Skill to level 99.
