With the new Varlamore update, OSRS has introduced one of the most significant changes to the Herblore skill to date. Mastering Mixology is a new minigame that offers a fresh way to train Herblore, while also rewarding players with valuable quality-of-life upgrades and plenty of gold. But what exactly is this minigame? In Mastering Mixology, you serve the Alchemical Society, similar to how Giant's Foundry works. You'll receive orders to craft specific potions, though the process is quite different from traditional potion-making. Let's dive into how you can get started with this activity to boost both your account and bank value!
Location
This new Alchemical Society is located in the brand new island of Aldarin, which is located in Varlamore. The only requirement to reach this place is the completion of the quest "Children of the Sun". If you haven't completed the quest yet, simply click the hyperlink to be taken directly to the guide. Here are the best ways you can take to reach this place:
- The best way to reach the Alchemical Society is by using the code C.K.Q on a fair ring. After teleporting, simply run south-east and go down the stairs.
- If you don't have access to the fairy rings, you can use the Quetzal Transport System to fly to the island. After landing, run north and go down the stairs.
- You can pay to get to the island via a ship. This ship is located on the Sunset Coast and will cost you 20 gold.
- You can also charter a ship to Aldarin from any dock that has the option.
- Lastly you can move your house to Aldarin and teleport to your house. After getting out of your house simply run south and head down the stairs.
Requirements
As mentioned before, the only quest you need to participate in this minigame is the "Children of the Sun". Now let's talk about the items and level requirements that you will need to participate in this minigame.
Skill Requirements
To be able to play this minigame you will need at least level 60 Herblore. This however is just the entry requirement and you can benefit greatly by having a higher Herblore level. The recommended level to start playing this minigame is Level 81 Herblore. Being at this level will unlock all the potion recipes for you, which in turn will grant better rewards.
Item Requirements
To participate in this minigame, you'll need three new essential items. These are:
- Mox
- Lye
- Aga
You can obtain these items by refining herbs or unfinished potions. Each herb or potion yields a specific amount of Mox, Lye, or Aga, so understanding and calculating their prices is essential to maximize the value of your gold. Here are the herbs that you can use and their prices based on how much paste they provide:
Herb | Paste | Cost/paste | ||
Type | Qty | Herb | (unf) | |
Guam leaf | Mox | 10 | 25.10 | 36.70 |

Kwuarm | Lye | 33 | 117.21 | 122.82 |

These prices change constantly so always check them before participating in Mastering Mixology. If you need a large amount of OSRS Gold in a short period of time, head to the RPGStash RuneScape Store to make a quick purchase.
How to Master Mixology
So now that you know the requirements and the location, let's get to mixing!
Refining Herbs
First and foremost start refining your herbs by interacting with the refiner, which is conveniently near a bank chest. There are two ways to do this:
- If you want a more AFK experience you can just click once and it will automatically refine every herb or potion in your inventory. After that you can bank and repeat.
- Second way is not AFK but much faster. To refine your herbs faster simply spam click the refiner and this will make it so that you will be refining a herb each tick.
After refining all your items you can start playing the game. Our recommended quantity is 3000 of each Mox,Aga and Lye. This amount will last you your first trip so more the merrier.
Step by Step Mastering Mixology
Before beginning your mixology journey, it is highly recommended that you download the "Mastering Mixology" plugin from the plugin hub. First let's talk about everything that you can interact with in this room.
Hopper
This is where you deposit your pastes. Everytime you craft a potion it will automatically use pastes that you have stored in your hopper. The capacity of this hopper is 3000 of each Aga, Lye and Mox.
Levers
There are three levers which you need to operate to create combinations and craft potions. The lever on the left marked by blue is for Mox, the lever in the middle marked by green is for Aga and the lever on the right marked by red is for Lye. Interacting with a lever will pour 1 dose of that paste into the mixer. You will need to pour 3 doses to create a mix.
Orders
The text you can see on the top left are orders. You must complete at least one order correctly to receive new ones. Let's talk about how you can interpret these orders.
- The icon on the left indicates which method you need to use to craft that potion.
- The name and the letters in parentheses, tells us the order in which we must pull the levers. For example "MML" means 2 Mox followed by 1 Lye. So you need to pull the blue lever twice then the red lever once.
Once you pull the correct levers you can collect your potion from the mixing vessel.
Finishing the Potions and Delivering the Order
After you finish mixing all 3 of your potions, you will need to turn them into a finished product either by crystallising them, homogenising them or concentrating them.
- For crystallisation, you need to use the western table. The icon that will appear for this process is a vial, thus the vial tile marker on the ground.&
- For concentration, you need to use the eastern table. The icon that will appear for this process is a cauldron, thus the cauldron tile marker on the ground.
- For homogenisation, you need to use the northern table. The icon that will appear for this process is a "V" symbol, thus the "V" tile marker on the ground.
You can either use the potions in your inventory individually on the required station, or simply click on the station to begin. If you click the table, it will automatically process the potions in your inventory in the order they were created, so be careful.
After finishing your orders, you can hand them in using the conveyor belt that can be found in the northern part of the room. Depending on the potion you have created you will receive resin which you can spend on the rewards shop. For example, If you have created a potion MML, you will receive Mox and Lye points. Mox points would be higher since you used two Mox pastes in the potion.
Plants and Point Boosts
As shown in the picture above there are 4 plants that you can interact with in this room. One of these plants will grow up every once in a while, and you can pick them up. If you don't pick it up in time it will wither and die. You can't leave with this weed in your inventory, it will straight up just disappear. Also, it is a bad idea to hold on to this weed as it will prevent a second one from spawning. You also can't put two weeds in one potion.
You can use this plant with a potion to get more experience and reward points from that potion. As a rule of thumb use it on a potion that has all 3 pastes, this will result in more experience and reward resins and always avoid putting it in potions that have only 1 paste in them like "MMM". Those potions will yied the least rewards.
An Example Process
- Deposit all your pastes into the hopper.
- Craft all 3 potions using the correct levers.
- Finish brewing them using the 3 stations.
- Add a digweed to a potion if you have any.
- Fulfil the order by putting your potions on the conveyor belt.
- Repeat!
Tips & Tricks for Efficiency
There are few things you can do to maximise your efficiency, experience and rewards.
- First and foremost you should always create your potions in the correct order to avoid manually using the potion on a station. As a rule of thumb you should always prioritise creating potions that require Crystallisation (Vial) and Homogenization (V). You should always create the potion that requires Concentration (Cauldron) last. This is because of how these stations work which is our next point.
- There are few ways to make stations work faster. If you are using the vial or the V station there will be a small window to click the station again to gain some experience and a huge boost to the progress bar. If you are using the plugin this is extremely easy to do as the plugin will highlight the table as green. If not you need to get used to when it happens, for the V table there is a visual indicator of confetti flying out of the station. Example in the picture below:
- For the cauldron you can simply spam click the table to gain more experience and a faster progress. This is why it is best to leave cauldron potions to last as to prevent accidental miss-brews while spam clicking.
- As mentioned before, always use the digweed in potions that have all 3 pastes in them, to maximise rewards.
- Last trick you can do is order skipping. Depending on your RNG you will probably end up with more Mox resin than other resins. So if you receive orders that are heavily favouring one resin over the other you can simply do one and hand in the order to skip the remaining two orders. Doing this will allow you to spend your pastes more carefully and balance your reward resins.
