Long Guide

Starting Out
Items needed: None
Looking to learn the ancient art of Herblore? Your first stop is Kaqemeex, who you'll find hanging out in the stone circle north of Taverley. Head up the hill on the east side of the road leading to Burthorpe. Kaqemeex has an interesting story about how they lost their old stone circle to some dark wizards down in Varrock. More importantly, he'll point you toward Sanfew for your next step.
Meeting Sanfew
Items needed: Raw bear meat, raw rat meat, raw beef, raw chicken
Head back into Taverley and look for the large octagonal building with the herb icon. This is the Herblore shop, and you'll find Sanfew upstairs. Tell him Kaqemeex sent you to help with the ritual. He'll explain that you need to enchant four specific meats using the Cauldron of Thunder.
Getting the Meats
You've got a few options for getting your hands on the required meats:
- Grand Exchange Method (Fastest)
- Simply buy all four raw meats from other players
- Hunter's Method (Free but slower)
- For rat meat: Kill giant rats near the southeast Varrock mine
- For bear meat: Find bears just south of the mine
- For chicken: Head toward Lumbridge, plenty of chickens around
- For beef: Kill cows in the nearby pasture
Pro tip: If you don't want to trek to Varrock, there's a bear near Ice Mountain, chickens and cows at the Falador farm, and rats near Port Sarim's church.
- Ironman Method If you've got access to Canifis, you can buy all meats from Rufus' Meat Emporium.
The Dungeon Adventure
Items needed: The four raw meats, some food (if low level)
Now comes the fun part - enchanting those meats in the Cauldron of Thunder. The cauldron's hidden away in Taverley Dungeon, so here's how to get there:
- Find the dungeon entrance south of Taverley
- Head down the ladder
- Walk north past some level 22 and 25 skeletons
- You'll reach a gate guarded by two level 19 animated armors
Quick tip: These armors will attack regardless of your level, but here's a neat trick - if you spam click the gate, you can actually skip fighting them entirely!
The Enchanting Process

Items needed: Raw bear meat, raw rat meat, raw beef, raw chicken
Once you've made it past those pesky armors, you'll spot the Cauldron of Thunder. This is where the magic happens - literally! Take each piece of raw meat and use it on the cauldron (don't try to just click the cauldron, it won't work). You'll notice each piece turns a nice shade of blue when enchanted. Here's what you'll end up with:
- Enchanted bear meat
- Enchanted rat meat
- Enchanted beef
- Enchanted chicken
Wrapping Things Up
Items needed: All four enchanted meats
With your newly enchanted meats in hand, it's time to head back out. Leave the dungeon the same way you came in - just watch out for those skeletons again if you're low level. Head back to Sanfew in his shop and hand over the meats. He'll then send you back to Kaqemeex for one final chat.
Return to the stone circle and speak with Kaqemeex one last time. He'll give you a proper introduction to the art of Herblore, and just like that - you've completed the quest!
Rewards
- 4 Quest points
- Herblore skill unlocked
- 250 Herblore experience (gets you to level 3, just 26 XP shy of level 4)
Why This Quest Matters
This isn't just any old quest - it's the key to unlocking the Herblore skill. But more than that, it's actually required for quite a few other important quests including:
- A Kingdom Divided
- Heroes' Quest
- Song of the Elves
- Several others that need Herblore skills
Pro Tips
- If you're a low-level player, bring some food for the dungeon section
- The spam-clicking gate trick can save you some hassle with the animated armors
- Consider getting the meats before starting the quest to save time running around
- Remember to use the meats ON the cauldron - don't just click the cauldron itself
