Game Guides , Runescape
The Wilderness is scary enough for all OSRS players because of all the PK'es and monsters located in the area. One of the scary bosses that you can come across against in the Wilderness is the Chaos Elemental. This boss has fallen many players but we're here to make sure that you're not one of them.
What Is The Chaos Elemental?
The Chaos Elemental is a dark cloud with six tentacles that dwells in the members-only section of the Wilderness, just west of the Rogue's Castle. This area is moderately easy to access from the deep Wilderness teleport lever in Ardougne or Edgeville. The nearby Wilderness Obelisk can randomly teleport players south-east of the Rogue's Castle, after the hard Wilderness Diary is completed, the location can be chosen from any Wilderness obelisk.
The Chaos Elemental is generally killed for its dragon 2h sword and pickaxe drops. It also has a higher drop rate of the pet chaos elemental compared to the Chaos Fanatic. In addition, it is immune to venom-any items that are able to inflict venom will inflict regular poison instead.
As this boss is located deep within the Wilderness, and wanders around in a multi-combat zone, beware of player-killers! Do not bring items you are not willing to lose.
Killing the Chaos Elemental is a requirement for the Hard Wilderness Diary.
Where To Find Chaos Elemental?
You have multiple ways to get to the Chaos Elemental. However, you're always going to be at risk of PK'ers as the boss is within the Wilderness. Here are some of the ways you can get to it:
- If you've completed the hard Wilderness Diary, redirect a Wilderness Obelisk from your house or outside the Ferox Enclave to Level 50 and head west. This option is the best as it's item-free and the shortest route.
- Teleport to the Fountain of Rune via wilderness sword 4; requires completion of the elite Wilderness Diary.
- Use an Annakarl Teleport or tablet (requires completion of Desert Treasure I), then run northwest to a gate in the fence, and northeast from there.
- From Edgeville bank: bring a knife or slash weapon, run south, pull the lever, run north, cut the web, then run east past the Resource Area and Scorpion Pit.
- From Mage Arena bank: bring a knife or slash weapon, pull the lever, cut the two webs, then continue east.
Staying Safe In The Wilderness
Given the Chaos Elemental's location in multi-combat deep Wilderness, encountering player killers, both in teams and as individuals, is highly likely. The Rogue's Castle nearby serves as a strategic spot for attackers to hop worlds and scout for potential victims, thanks to visible projectiles beyond normal viewing range. Consider switching worlds between kills to potentially evade PKers and bypass respawn time.
If you're spotted or attacked, swiftly consider your escape options:
- Wilderness Obelisk (Level 50): Situated southeast of the Rogue's Castle, the obelisk's default destination is random. However, you may teleport to relative safety, such as single-way combat or a lower Wilderness level. Completing the hard Wilderness Diary enables selecting a destination (the level 13 obelisk, close to the Ferox Enclave, is safest). Note: You cannot use obelisks while under Tele Block.
- Rogue's Castle: Utilize its numerous doorways and staircases to confuse and shake off attackers. Moving unpredictably and closing doors behind you can buy time to log out, though less effective when chased by a team.
- Resource Area: Located westward, entry requires 7,500 coins, or less depending on Wilderness Diary completion (6,000 for medium, 3,750 for hard, or 0 for elite). If your attacker(s) lack coins or the elite diary perk, you can escape here.
- Magic Axe Hut: Found northwest, entry requires a Lockpick and Thieving level 23. Though aggressive magic axes prevent logging out, it's single-way combat. An axe attack may enable X-logging. Two entrances/exits aid in creating space.
- Deserted Keep: To the west, a teleport lever leads to Ardougne (or Edgeville with the easy Wilderness Diary). A web blocks the entrance; bring a knife or slash weapon. Warning: Cannot use the lever under Tele Block.
If survival seems unlikely, prioritize preserving prayer points to maintain Protect Item. Running out of prayer restoration may prompt accepting fate rather than consuming food, potentially exposing your fourth valuable item to smiting. Consider carrying a Falador shield for last-resort prayer restoration, as it's free to obtain. The Demonic Ruins southward passively restore 1 prayer point every 3 seconds, offering a slim chance to reactivate Protect Item.

Chaos Elemental Guide OSRS
Before fighting the Chaos Elemental, you'll need to learn its attack and attack patterns first.
- Primary Attack - Discord:
- The Chaos Elemental's primary attack, Discord, is a projectile assault that comes in three different colors, resembling Magic, Ranged, or Melee damage.
- Each projectile can hit into the 20s, making it a significant threat.
- While it's impossible to predict the exact type of damage, Magic damage occurs most frequently.
- It's recommended to use Protect from Magic prayer to mitigate the damage from this attack.
- Special Attacks:
- Confusion: This attack teleports players a short or considerable distance away from the Chaos Elemental, disrupting positioning and tactics.
Madness: The Chaos Elemental's madness knows no bounds as it unleashes an attack that can unequip up to four items the player is wielding.
- This forces players to take precious time to re-equip their armor and weapons, leaving them vulnerable during the battle.
- Notably, the player's weapon is always prioritized, ensuring that re-equipping the weapon is a must after this attack.
Countering Chaos Elemental's Madness
Using food items like Guthix rest, curry, and summer pies that leave behind items can prevent the Chaos Elemental from using its Madness attack on you, as it cannot unequip items when your inventory is full. If you've completed Alfred Grimhand's Barcrawl, you can also disable vial smashing by the barbarian guard, ensuring that potion consumption leaves the vial behind.
However, this strategy opens the door for the Chaos Elemental to utilize its Discord and Confusion attacks instead. To mitigate this risk, leave just one empty spot in your inventory, allowing the Chaos Elemental to unequip only one item. With practice, this method can conserve supplies since the Madness attack inflicts no damage, unlike the potentially high-hitting Discord attack.
Alternatively, carry a sack or basket of potatoes, cabbages, onions, etc., and empty it after each bite to create space in your inventory. With practice, this process can be executed swiftly without disrupting combat. Moreover, by leaving an open inventory slot and timing the emptying of the sack before the Madness attack lands, you can fill the slot and nullify the attack, ensuring zero damage.
Solo Flinching Strategy
For the safest solo method, utilize the hit-and-hide tactic, also known as flinching or hit-and-run, using nearby trees. First, draw the Chaos Elemental's attention, then quickly move behind a tree to avoid its attacks. Wait for its Hitpoint bar to vanish, strike it once, and retreat behind the tree again. Repeat this process until the elemental is defeated. Any Melee weapon can be used for this tactic. While a full set of Verac's equipment is recommended for faster kills, be cautious as you risk losing the Verac's helm if targeted by a PK team.
Alternatively, for a 3-item-safe layout, equip a high-stat melee weapon such as a Godsword, Dragon warhammer with a Defender, or Dharok's greataxe. Pair this with 1-3 additional items to enhance offensive bonuses, and include some inexpensive prayer-boosting gear like monk robes for moments when offensive prayers and Preserve may be active.
If avoiding the hit-and-hide tactic, wearing a Karil's leathertop, Verac's helm and plateskirt, along with a Crystal shield or Dragonfire shield, and wielding a Rune crossbow or Armadyl crossbow with Diamond bolts (e), simplifies defeating this boss, even at Combat levels below 100. However, be mindful of the risk involved. Due to the likelihood of encountering player killers, it's advisable to stick to lower-cost gear to mitigate the risk.
Solo Safe Spotting Strategy
To efficiently utilize the safe-spotting method against the Chaos Elemental, designate a column of tiles running North to South parallel to the Wilderness Resource Area.
Begin by marking the farthest north tile parallel to the NorthEastern most Yew Tree and the southernmost tile parallel to the Wilderness fence. This establishes the westernmost point the Chaos Elemental can attack.
Once the Chaos Elemental is near its spawn by the Rogue's Castle, aggro it and lure it south towards the Wilderness Fence, using a nearby 2x2 tree to save some hits. Then, run west along the Wilderness Fence until you reach the marked tile. Wait for the Chaos Elemental to catch up, then run directly North to the marked tiles and pause until it approaches you again.
Approach the Chaos Elemental by attacking it and stepping one tile to the West when in melee range. If done correctly, the Chaos Elemental will be on the marked tile line while you stand one tile to the West. From this position, you can attack the Chaos Elemental freely without retaliation as long as you don't cross back over the tile line.
Be cautious of the red teleportation attack when moving from Southern to Northern tiles, as it may teleport you West of the attackable line. If this occurs and you fail to re-aggro the Chaos Elemental before it resets, you'll need to wait for it to return to the spawn area and restart the lure.
This method is particularly useful for lower-leveled or less-geared accounts, such as Ironmen. While it requires practice and trial and error to set up, once lured, you can finish the kill almost entirely AFK and much faster than flinching with a tree.
Ensure to bring food, as you'll be attacked by the Chaos Elemental approximately 10 times during setup. Even low-healing food like Tuna may suffice. Additionally, consider carrying stamina potions or energy potions to replenish run energy if needed during the lure setup, as it can be demanding.
