The Rogue class in Diablo 4 is beloved for many reasons but for most, it’s the exciting thrill of using a highly mobile character that gets them excited. As a squishy class, Rogues can rely on ranged abilities and crossbows to be able to kill the toughest enemies from afar. If you’re looking for an endgame build that gives you just that, then this might just be for you.
Rogues are one of the highest damaging characters in Diablo 4 given the right setup. Now, this build won’t just give you enough damage to take out bosses easily, it will also make sure that your Rogue is always within a safe distance from enemies.
The Sharp-Eyed Rogue
This build will primarily use Penetrating Shot, which is one of the best offensive abilities of the Rogue class. With it, you can fire one massive piercing arrow toward the enemy. It might sound pretty simple for an endgame build but the right setup can make this one of the deadliest abilities in the game.
To maximize Penetrating Shot, you’ll need to select a few important passives, as well as have the right positioning against the enemy. Let’s talk about your Caged Hearts for this build first.
Caged Hearts
Caged Heart of Tempting Fate
Effect: You gain [45 - 65]%[+] Critical Strike Damage but your Non-Critical Strikes deal [20 - 25]%[x] less damage.
Many Rogue builds rely on Critical Strikes to deal a substantial amount of damage to enemies in a single shot. That makes Caged Heart of the Tempting Fate, a perfect option for this build. The trade-off between your Critical Strike and Non-Critical Strikes is going to be worth it, as the right positioning will let your Penetrating Shot take huge chunks off of the enemy’s health.
Caged Heart of Cluster Munitions
Effect: Lucky Hit: You have up to a 20% chance to launch 2 Stun Grenades that deal [1 - 1] Physical damage and Stun enemies for 0.50 seconds. (Rogue Only)
Although you’ll have a few skills for survivability with this build, you’ll still need extra help in emergency scenarios. Stun Grenades are excellent at giving you enough time to move out of the way in mobs. With this build, you’ll get many opportunities for Lucky Hits so you can unleash Stun Grenades automatically a lot of the time.
Caged Heart of the Vile Apothecary
Effect: Your attacks have a [5 - 15]% chance to apply all Imbuement effects at [50 - 60]%[x] of normal potency. (Rogue Only)
All of the Rogue’s imbuement choices have their own merits and downsides. This special Caged Heart makes it possible to use all of them, at least at a lower potency. Still, that’s more than enough to help you inflict serious damage and crowd control effects on your enemies.
Specialization
For this build, you’re going to have to use the Combo Points specialization. This is the first Specialization you can unlock for the Rogue. To give you a better idea, here’s a quick guide on what you get for using Combo Points in combat.
As you can see, your Penetrating Shot is going to benefit a ton from using this Specialization setup.
Skill Allocation
For the most important part of this build, you’ll need to follow this Skill allocation guide. As you can see, there are a few primary forms of attacks you’ll have but ultimately, you’ll still rely on Penetrating Shot.
Puncture - 3 Skill Points
Upgrades: Enhanced Puncture, Fundamental Puncture
For this build, you’re going to want Puncture as a Basic Skill. Aside from your main source of Energy, Puncture can also help you apply Slow and Vulnerable consistently. Of course, it’s also going to be useful to you if you ever run out of any mana or cooldown.
Additionally, you’re going to need Puncture as a means to start racking up your Combo Points to help improve your Penetrating Shot.
Penetrating Shot - 7 Skill Points
Upgrades: Enhanced Penetrating Shot, Improved Penetrating Shot
This is going to be the heart and soul of this build. While its main focus is to deal heavy damage to a target, Penetrating Shot can be used to deal damage to enemies in an area as it pierces through enemies.
Now, it’s important to get the Improved Penetrating Shot upgrade as it can significantly increase your Critical Strike Chance by 20%. Since you’ll always be facing mobs in the endgame, there are a ton of opportunities to start hitting more than 3 enemies with Penetrating Shot.
This is one of the easiest Core Skills to use in the game and requires little mastery.
Rapid Fire - 7 Skill Points
Upgrades: Enhanced Rapid Fire, Advanced Rapid Fire
Apart from Penetrating Shot, you’re to get Rapid Fire in the Core Skills line too. Penetrating Shot will lack the single-target damage capacity that Penetrating Shot lacks. This is a good alternative to Penetrating Shot in intense boss fights in the game.
With Advanced Rapid Fire as an upgrade, you’ll have a steady means to regenerate your Energy so long as you’re able to hit any Vulnerable enemies.
Stutter Step - 3 Skill Points
For the first passive, you’ll need to get Stutter Step. The build gives multiple opportunities for Critical Strikes. With Stutter Step, you’ll always have the capacity to move around and reposition yourself in combat with the help of your movement speed.
Of course, the extra movement speed is also going to be very helpful for Rogues as they’re rather squishy.
Shadow Step - 3 Skill Points
Upgrades: Enhanced Shadow Step, Disciplined Shadow Step
Speaking of squishiness, one way to counter the vulnerability of this build is by getting Shadow Step. As an ability, Shadow Step should primarily be used to get out of trouble easily. It can be used offensively as it lets you reposition yourself to get nearer to key targets as well.
Although it’s often used as a last resort, don’t be afraid to use Shadow Step consistently as there are means to reset the cooldown with the upgrade we’ve chosen.
Weapon Mastery - 3 Skill Points
The Weapon Mastery passive gives you a 15% boost in your Critical Strike Damage. Seeing that this build will have a high chance of landing critical hits, Weapon Mastery is a perfect passive to get more out of the entire setup.
Dark Shroud - 6 Skill Points
Upgrades: Enhanced Dark Shroud, Subverting Dark Shroud
Although you’ll have to do your best to create a distance between you and your enemies, you’ll still need all the help you need on the defensive front. In this case, that job belongs to Dark Shroud. Aside from damage reduction, Dark Shroud also gives you extra movement speed in worst-case scenarios.
You should only use Dark Shroud for when you’re deeply surrounded by enemies and can’t find a way out.
Exploit - 3 Skill Points
With Exploit, you’re getting damage bonuses to both Healthy and Injured enemies so it covers you on almost all stages of a fight. When trying out this build, you should try to increase your damage to Healthy and Injured enemies as much as possible to get the most out of Critical Strikes.
Malice - 3 Skill Points
Malice further ramps up your damage to Vulnerable enemies by 9%. Like Exploit, Malice will help increase your damage against enemies heavily but it’s focused on Vulnerable foes specifically. Don’t worry though as you have a huge chance at making enemies Vulnerable with the way this build is set up.
Shadow Imbuement - 3 Skill Points
Upgrade: Enhanced Shadow Imbuement, Mixed Shadow Imbuement
You’ll use Shadow Imbuement to buff the damage you deal with Penetrating Shot. It converts your damage to Shadow Damage. You can use Shadow Imbuement to easily dispose of large enemy hordes and to increase your Energy as well. It’s very efficient at thinning out the horde.
Ice Imbuement - 3 Skill Points
Upgrade: Enhanced Ice Imbuement, Mixed Shadow Imbuement
Similar to Shadow Imbuement, this skill will be used to enhance Penetrating Shot. The only difference is that instead of dealing damage to enemy groups, Ice Imbuement can be used to Chill and eventually Freeze enemies so it’s great for crowd control.
Keep in mind that you can’t use two imbuements at a time. Both have specific situations they are good for so you can at least determine when to use one best.
Precision Imbuement - 3 Skill Points
Aside from the base upgrades they give your attack, Precision Imbuement can help increase your Critical Strike Chance effectively too. You can use the two imbuements alternatively so that means there’s always a source of extra Critical Strike on your end.
Frigid Finesse - 3 Skill Points
Ice Imbuement gives you extra Frost damage so it’s a good idea to get Frigid Finesse for that extra damage boost as well. Between the two Imbuement skills you have, you’ll most likely use Ice Imbuement most of the time so the bonus this passive gives will be worth it.
Innervation - 3 Skill Points
Seeing as you’re focused on dealing damage with your Core Skills, you’ll need all of the Energy you need to actually make this build useful. Innervation rewards your precision and aggressiveness with Energy regeneration so you can continue damaging your enemies with your skills.
Adrenaline - 1 Skill Point
Only needed to get to the next passive.
Haste - 3 Skill Points
Haste helps give you bonuses for when you’re low or high Energy. At high Energy, you can use the extra movement speed to reposition yourself and make your shots matter more. At low Energy, you can use the extra attack speed to help replenish your Energy using basic attacks. Of course, it will be easier to start racking up Combo Points too.
Precision - Skill Point
Precision rounds up this entire kit by giving you rewards for every Critical Strike that you make. With the bonus that you can get from this key passive, you can deal a significant amount of damage to even the toughest bosses in the game.
Gameplay
As the name of this build suggests, you’ll have to work your way around the map like a true marksman. Position yourself in tactical places so that you can get the most out of your skills. If you’ve been used to a pure melee combat approach before, it might take some time to get used to the new long-rage style of this build.
As for combat itself, you’ll need to use Puncture as a main means to rack up your Combo Points. As much as possible, only use your skills once you actually have 3 points so that you can deal maximum damage. Penetrating Strike is best used against dense hordes while Rapid Fire is best used for single-targets like Elites and bosses.
Manage your Imbuements well as these can really help you clear out enemies. If you’re having a tough time against a thick horde, use Shadow Imbuement to kill them off quickly. Ice Imbuement should be reserved to crowd control enemies.
Now, you should primarily use Shadow Step to reposition yourself better. However, don’t be afraid to use this skill for escape purposes. Your primary defensive skill should still be Dark Shroud though as it gives a significant damage reduction bonus.
Aspect
For this build, you’ll need the Rapid Aspect and Trickshot Aspects most importantly. Lucky for you, both have a Codex that you can get from the dungeons in the game. Here are the Aspects that this build needs.
Aspect of Disobedience in Halls of the Damned (Kehjistan)
Aspect of the Expectant in Underroot (Scosglen)
Cheat's Aspect in Luban's Rest (Scosglen)
Corruption Aspect in Renegade's Retreat (Kehjistan)
Edgemaster’s Aspect in Oldstones (Scosglen)
Might Aspect in Dark Ravine (Dry Steppes)
Rapid Aspect in Buried Halls (Dry Stepps)
Trickshot Aspect in Bastion of Faith (Hawezar)
Vengeful Aspect in Inferno (Kehjistan)
Wind Striker Aspect in Shivta Ruins (Kehjistan)
Aside from this, you should also get Mangler’s and Umbrous Aspects. Umbrous Aspect, in particular, is more important as it rewards your Marksman skills with amazing bonuses. Unfortunately, you’ll need luck and a bit of hard work to get these to drop from loot.
As for your equipment, make sure to focus on getting gear with bonuses to Critical Strike Chance and Critical Strike damage as they can help max out the damage you deal even further.
An Eye For Killing
This special Rogue build makes your character the ultimate marksman in Sanctuary. Working hard for the Aspects and Caged Hearts for this build guarantees that you’ll be seeing a ton of Critical Strikes whenever you’re going up against the toughest of foes in the game.
