Build Guides , Diablo 4 , Game Guides , Sorcerer
Of the three elements that the Sorcerer controls, most people prefer using Frost skills because of its ability to stop enemies in their tracks. With the right setup, you can inflict Freeze on every enemy around you, which is an excellent strategy for innately squishy Sorcerers. It can be tough finding a build that’s perfect for Frost Sorcerers but you’re in luck today.
The influx of Storm Skill heavy builds makes Frost-focused setups very rare. However, we’ve come up with a build that makes Blizzard the star of the show, and your enemies, literally frozen in awe.
The Endless Blizzard Build
Blizzard is one of the best Frost Skills in the game right now. It’s an AoE attack that can easily crowd-control enemies. With the right setup, you can spam Blizzard multiple times and enemies will find it difficult to even get close to you. To make your Blizzards even deadlier, you’ll need to grind for Glacial Aspect.
Before anything else though, let’s talk about one of the core parts of this build, which is your Caged Hearts. If there’s anything that Diablo 4 Season 1 has taught us, it’s that the right Caged Heart can make any build overpowered.
Caged Heart
Caged Heart of Tal’Rasha
Effect: For each unique element you deal damage with, you deal [7.0 - 12.0]%[x] increased damage for [2 - 8] seconds.
Although this build is heavy on Frost Skills, there are still opportunities to deal with other elemental damage so something like Tal’Rasha is going to be beneficial. You’re going to be using Caged Heart of Revenge too so that’s one guaranteed element that you can proc simply by getting damaged.
Caged Heart of the Barber
Effect: Critical Strikes and all subsequent damage within [2.0 - 4.0] seconds is absorbed by your target. Then, the absorbed damage erupts onto surrounding enemies. Stored damage is increased by 11%[x] per second.
This special Caged Heart helps deal with crowd-controlling enemies and taking out weaker mobs so you don’t get swarmed. Additionally, the explosion you deal will be in the form of Shadow damage so that’s another element that you can power up with using Tal’Rasha.
Caged Heart of Revenge
Effect: [10.0 - 20.0]% of incoming damage is instead suppressed. When you use a Defensive, Subterfuge, or a Macabre skill, all suppressed damage is amplified by 250%[x] and explodes, dealing up to [200 - 42,340] Fire damage to nearby enemies.
This is going to be the Caged Heart that can help improve your survivability in the game. The Caged Heart of Revenge is essential for squishy characters so it’s going to be a must-have for someone like the Sorcerer.
Enchantments
Another core aspect of any Sorcerer build are the Enchantments that you can equip. For this, pick these two Enchantments:
Ice Shards
Effect: Automatically conjured and fly toward frozen enemies.
One of the best things about this build is that it will constantly Chill, and then Freeze enemies in your path. With the Ice Shards Enchantment, you can deal even more damage without having to use any Mana as the skill is automatically activated for you, free of charge.
Blizzard
Effect: A Blizzard will form around you every 15 seconds.
If you manage to snag the Glacial Aspect, then getting Blizzard as an Enchantment is an excellent idea. With you constantly making Blizzards actively and passively, you can deal even more damage with the ice spikes that are caused by Glacial Aspect.
Skill Allocation
Frost Bolt - 3 Skill Points
Upgrades: Enhanced Frost Bolt, Glinting Frost Bolt
Frost Bolt will be your Basic Skill for this build. Aside from giving you a lot of opportunities to Freeze enemies, you can also generate a decent amount of Mana with the upgrades we’re selecting. It’s not going to do a lot of damage considering that the skill itself is only level 1. As such, it will primarily be a utility skill on your end.
Ice Shards - 7 Skill Points
Upgrades: Enhanced Ice Shards, Destructive Ice Shards
Aside from Blizzard, your main damaging skill is going to be Ice Shards. With this as your Enchantment, you can automatically cast shards on any Frozen enemies, which will be common if you follow this build through and through. You’re going to want to maximize the level of Ice Shards to maximize your damage with it.
Ice Shards can be an effective skill to deal with single or multiple enemies. However, it’s best used against Elites and bosses.
Teleport - 3 Skill Points
Upgrades: Enhanced Teleport, Shimmering Teleport
With your Sorcerer as squishy as it is, you’re going to need Teleport to stay out of harm's way when necessary. With this as a mobility skill, you can easily dodge heavy mobs and other dangerous enemies. You can also use it as a means to engage enemies. Use Teleport to drop in, and then use Frost Nova or Deep Freeze.
Frost Nova - 7 Skill Points
Upgrades: Enhanced Frost Nova, Mystical Frost Nova
Frost Nova is both an offensive and defensive skill. You can easily crowd-control enemies around you using this ability but what’s great is that it deals excellent damage too. With Ice Shards as an Enchantment, you can deal a lot of damage to enemies that you Freeze within the close radius of Frost Nova.
Ice Armor - 3 Skill Points
Upgrades: Enhanced Ice Armor, Shimmering Ice Armor
Ice Armor is an excellent last-resort defensive skill if Teleport is out of the question. Aside from giving you a moderate shield to withstand enemy attacks, Ice Armor is also going to give you a good chance to regenerate your Mana with the upgrades we’re going to get for it. That said, you can also use Ice Armor if you want to replenish your Mana in emergency scenarios.
Glass Cannon - 3 Skill Points
Despite its heavy downside, Sorcerers love Glass Cannon very much. The trade-off between the damage you take and the damage you deal is well-worth it because after all, your goal is to kill every enemy in sight. With most enemies Freezing around you, you might not have to worry about the increased damage you take.
Align The Elements - 1 Skill Point
Only needed to gain access to the next passive.
Mana Shield - 3 Skill Points
This passive is going to help us mitigate the extra damage that you get from Glass Canon. This build is very heavy on consuming your Mana so you don’t have to worry about never doing enough to trigger Mana Shield. This is going to save you more than once throughout your journey in the endgame.
Protection - 3 Skill Points
With the way this build is set up, you can also trigger cooldowns often. Protection grants you even more durability whenever this happens. Overall, Mana Shield and Protection totally negate the downside of Glass Canon so that you can only reap its amazing damage-dealing benefits.
Blizzard - 5 Skill Points
Upgrades: Enhanced Blizzard, Mage Blizzard
The star of this build is going to be Blizzard. When used, Blizzard constantly damages, Chills, and then Freezes enemies in a certain area. This makes it an excellent skill to have whether you’re looking to clear out mobs or you're looking to crowd control the enemy.
With Glacial Aspect, Blizzard will cause ice spikes to appear and these will eventually explode to damage enemies. Glacial Aspect also affects the Blizzard created by your Enchantment so you can further maximize your damage.
Icy Veil - 1 Skill Point
Only needed to gain access to the next passive.
Cold Front - 3 Skill Points
Ice Armor and some of the passives give you armor in an instant. Cold Front gives you more benefits by increasing the amount of Chill that you deal with while a Barrier is active. With a higher Chill rate, you can Freeze enemies faster.
Snap Freeze - 3 Skill Points
Snap Freeze gives you a chance to instantly Freeze enemies when using Frost Skills. This might seem unnecessary for this build but that extra chance to Freeze guarantees that you can stop enemies in their tracks almost always. If you don’t want this passive, take off two points and just allocate the rest to maximize Blizzard.
Deep Freeze - 3 Skill Points
Upgrades: Prime Deep Freeze, Supreme Deep Freeze
The best Ultimate Skill for this build is obviously going to be Deep Freeze. When activated, you become immune to all damage and you constantly deal damage and Chill to a large area. It’s a good defensive and offensive Ultimate Ability. Keep in mind that when you use this, it’s very likely that you’ll freeze every enemy around you so Ice Shards can trigger once again.
Permafrost - 3 Skill Points
This is a primary passive for those who are looking to build a character with Frost skills in mind. With the endgame filled with so many bosses and powerful Elites, you’re going to need Permafrost to maximize your damage against the toughest foes that endgame has to offer.
Hoarfrost - 3 Skill Points
You’ll be able to constantly deal Chill damage with this build. That said, Hoarfrost makes sure that you deal even more damage to those that are affected by Chill and Freeze. Adding this to your set of passives only means that you can basically kill or at least nearly kill every enemy you use Deep Freeze on.
Icy Touch - 3 Skill Points
Many of the upgrades we’ve chosen for this build are guaranteed to make your enemies Vulnerable. With this passive, along with Permafrost and Hoarfrost, you can take out even the toughest Elite and Bosses without breaking a sweat.
Avalanche - 1 Skill Point
The best Key Passive for this build is going to be Avalanche. This passive gives you a chance to cast any of your Frost Skills without consuming any Mana via Lucky Hit mechanics. With this, you can spam Blizzard and Ice Shards even more.
Gameplay
Contrary to most Sorcerer builds, this one actually works better if you’re right in front of enemies. Blizzard and Frost Nova work better when you’re close to enemies because they’re both AoE attacks. The closer you are to enemies, the more they pool in to try and surround you.
You can use Teleport to get out of trouble when necessary. However, you can also jump right on top of enemies to get the upper hand on them and use Deep Freeze. Blizzard or Frost Nova.
With this build, you shouldn’t actively use Ice Shards most of the time. You can automatically cast the shards so long as you Freeze enemies. The combination of passives and actives on this build guarantees that there’s always going to be opportunities to Freeze enemies.
SInce Sorcerers are squishy, you’ll need to manage Ice Armor in a way that it’s just a last resort defensive skill. When you’re running out of health, activate Ice Armor and use that opportunity to get away. If you have enemies in your way, you can cast Frost Nova or Blizzard to prevent them from following you.
Deep Freeze can be used in many scenarios but we find it best used as a means to thin out the herd in really dense and tight dungeons. Don’t be afraid to use this skill defensively too since you become invincible while it’s active.
Aspects
For this build, you’re going to want these codexes of Power by beating dungeons in Sanctuary.
Aspect of Disobedience in Halls of the Damned (Kehjistan)
Aspect of Piercing Cold in Dead Man's Dredge (Fractured Peaks)
Aspect of Storm Swell in Onyx Hold (Dry Steppes)
Aspect of the Umbral in Champion's Demise (Dry Steppes)
Control Aspect in Sunken Library (Kehjistan)
Ghostwalker Aspect in Broken Bulwark (Scosglen)
Prodigy’s Aspect in Witchwater (Hawezar)
Snowguard's Aspect in Fetid Mausoleum (Hawezar)
As we’ve said, it’s very important that you have Glacial Aspect. Understandably, it can be hard to look for a specific Aspect from loot drops. The Aspect can be acquired from the following loot:
1H Weapon
2H Weapon
Gloves
Amulet
Ring
That said, you should farm these enemies for a better chance at getting the Aspect.
Keep Everything Frozen
In terms of pure Freezing power, this build might just be the best in that regard. It can be hard getting used too as this build requires a bit of patience before you can fully utilize the damage and crowd controlling capabilities that this build has to offer.
