There are certain builds that you start with in Diablo II: Resurrected and there are those that you aspire to create at some point. The Nova Sorceress is a great example of the latter. However, this does not mean that you cannot go for a Nova Sorc D2R build as a ladder starter. In fact, we’re going to show you how!

Read further as we discuss one of the best map-clearing builds in Diablo II: Resurrected. If you have all of the necessary items, you will have in your hands a very powerful build that you can take very well until Season 9 ends!

Why Choose the Nova Sorceress?

Lightning Sorceresses are pretty powerful in Diablo II: Resurrected. Lightning and Chain Lightning are the two skills that most people typically utilize in this game. But, they are really missing out by not trying the powerful Nova.

You see, Nova is a lightning-based spell that prompts the Sorceress to create an expanding circle, which deals considerable damage to nearby enemies. The combination of Static Field and Nova makes it so much easier for you to clear entire maps of monsters.

Since Nova forces you to be somewhat close to the enemy, you have to utilize Energy Shield (ES) as well. This ability splits the damage you receive to your life and mana. The higher its level is, the more mana is consumed (and less life is taken) in the process.

Unbeknownst to some D2R players, Energy Shield synergizes with Telekinesis when it comes to the efficiency of damage absorption. Basically, the more points you allocate to Telekinesis, the more efficient ES becomes.

If you’ve spent 20 hard points on Telekinesis, for example, Energy Shield will only take 0.75 of your mana per 1 point of damage. This synergy becomes more emphasized when you have items that have “+ to all skills,” which you will have plenty of in this D2R Nova Sorceress build!

Now, the Nova Sorc is considered by many as the best map-clearing build because it can single-handedly kill all monsters on the battlefield just by using a couple of buttons. In fact, the build is so awesome in this regard that the Mercenary pretty much serves as a support aurabot and nothing else!

Playstyle

Pre-buff your Energy Shield by swapping to your Switch Weapon. If you have Thunder Storm, don’t forget to activate it as well. After that, scour the area for packs of monsters and use Static Field twice. Then, just spam Nova until the enemies are dead.

Although a high-level Energy Shield takes a significant amount of time to dissipate, keep an eye on it still. That’s because your survivability largely depends on the said defensive spell. Don’t worry, it’s easy to tell if you don’t have ES on because of that huge yellow globe that floats above your character.

Stats

  • Strength: Depends on gear
  • Dexterity: Depends on gear
  • Vitality: None
  • Energy: Dump all points here

In our D2R Nova Sorceress Guide for Season 9, we recommend that you do not put points on vitality simply because this build heavily relies on Energy Shield for survival.

We understand that this is not the usual thing to do when improving the survivability of your character in Diablo II: Resurrected. However, we’ve found that a high-level ES addresses all your concerns about not dying while fighting the minions of Hell.

If you’re uncomfortable not having more points to VIT, you could just attain 2,000 mana (with gear). After that, spend the remaining attribute points on vitality.

The amount of strength that you need depends on whether you want to use the Spirit shield or not. The Monarch Shield has the lowest strength requirement among the 4os shields in Diablo II: Resurrected. The only problem here is that it still requires 156 STR to equip. That’s why you have to decide if spending that many points on strength is worth it.

Skills

  • 20 points on Nova
  • 20 points on Static Field
  • 20 points on Lightning Mastery
  • 20 points on Telekinesis
  • 20 points on Energy Shield
  • 5 points on Thunder Storm
  • Put 1 point on the following skills:
    • Charged Bolt
    • Lightning
    • Chain Lightning
    • Teleport
    • Warmth

Charged Bolt and Static Field will help make your leveling journey smooth and seamless at the beginning. Be sure to get Warmth at level 2 to gain some passive mana regeneration. When you reach level 12, Nova will be unlocked, so spend the next points you receive on it.

At level 24, allocate a single point to Energy Shield. The next time you level up, take Telekinesis to improve ES efficiency. Then, spend your points alternating between Telekinesis and Energy Shield so that your mana won’t get diminished significantly when you take damage.

If you find that Nova is no longer demolishing enemies as quickly as it should, you can focus your attention on it and max it out completely. On the topic of offense, Lightning Mastery is a no-brainer when it comes to boosting the damage of Nova.

Now, at this point, it is up to you how you spend your skill points. If survivability is not much of a concern, then maxing out Nova and Lightning Mastery is the most logical choice. However, if your mana cannot keep up because of Energy Shield’s inefficiency, then ES and Telekinesis should not be forgotten.

The path you take does not matter that much since you are going to max those skills out anyway. It’s just a matter of balancing your D2R character based on the level of performance, as well as how well it survives in the higher difficulties.

Breakpoints

The Nova Sorceress, just like any Sorceress build in Diablo II: Resurrected, requires a considerably high amount of Faster Cast Rate or FCR. Since the 200% FCR breakpoint is a bit out of reach without heavy compromises, settle with 105% Faster Cast Rate instead.

Although Energy Shield helps keep you alive, you still want to recover quickly after getting hit. That’s why an FHR value of at least 60% should be achieved. The next Faster Hit Recovery breakpoint, which is 86%, is still possible. But, you have to sacrifice some damage because you’ll need a shield for that one.

We have a Sorceress breakpoints guide if you want to learn more.

Nova Sorceress Gear Recommendations

As mentioned earlier, the Nova Sorceress is typically not a D2R build that you start a new ladder season with. However, you can still make it work by equipping certain items. Just make sure to get the necessary upgrades when you have the means to do so.

Helmet

If you really want to try the Nova Sorc as your first character in D2R Season 9, then you’d want to use the Lore runeword for the helmet slot. Any item in Diablo II: Resurrected that raises the level of your skills is highly appreciated; even more so for this build!

Aside from that, Lore has that powerful “+2 to Mana after each kill” modifier, which should help with your mana woes early on. The slight reduction in the damage you receive helps improve survivability as well.

Lore_runeword_helmet

The ever-popular “Shako” is not bad for the D2R Nova Sorc. Besides its +2 to skills, the Harlequin Crest grants a great boost to your life and mana, which gets better as you level up! It is also one of the only sources of Magic Find (MF) in this character, so if you like to have some, then the Harlequin Crest is a good option, particularly for that purpose.

Ultimately, you will save your D2R runes to purchase the Griffon’s Eye. This thing has a special combination of lightning modifiers that works admirably well with the Nova Sorc, including -20% to enemy lightning resistance and +15% to lightning skill damage.

You can have this socketed by Larzuk in Act 5, which then allows you to insert a Rainbow Facet: Lightning for more damage or an Ist Rune for some Magic Find bonus.

Body Armor

The Skin of the Vipermagi is the only body armor that we can recommend specifically for the D2R Nova Sorceress. That is because it has three good bonuses that work perfectly for the build.

First of all, it has the +1 to all skills modifier. Your lightning spells, particularly Energy Shield and Telekinesis, perform better the higher their levels are. That is why wearing the Skin of the Vipermagi makes sense.

On top of that, this unique body armor boasts the highest Faster Cast Rate value among its counterparts in Diablo II: Resurrected. You need to achieve a 105% FCR breakpoint, remember? The Skin of the Vipermagi fills up a good chunk of it!

And lastly, the Skin of the Vipermagi gives your resistances a boost by as much as 35%! Although you’re not scared about elemental damage, you should be afraid of poison damage since it bypasses your Energy Shield!

Weapon

We recommend several good weapons for this D2R Nova Sorc build. The Crescent Moon is a popular choice because, aside from the fact that you can put it into a one-handed weapon, it reduces the lightning resistance of your enemies by 35% as well!

In addition, the Crescent Moon gives you Mana on Kill, which should help with recouping the mana you’ve spent casting Nova recently.

Use the Crystal Sword as the base because it only requires 43 STR to wield. Place the runes—Shael, Um, Tir—into the said weapon and in that specific order to create the Crescent Moon runeword.

Eschuta’s Temper is another amazing weapon for this build, mainly for its high 40% FCR and +3 to Sorc levels. If you are going to get one, make sure to obtain an Eschuta’s Temper with +20% to lightning skill damage. Add another Rainbow Facet: Lightning if your version comes with a socket.

Eschuta’s_Temper_weapon

Heart of the Oak rounds out the one-handed weapons we can recommend for this Diablo II: Resurrected build. It has some of the mods found in Eschuta’s Temper, particularly the +3 to skills and 40% FCR.

Although it does not boost your lightning skill damage, HOTO does increase your mana by a hefty amount (considering you have a ton of Energy). Not to mention that it bolsters your resistances by up to 40% as well.

Because you do not want to needlessly spend attribute points on strength, use the Flail as the base for the Ko, Vex, Pul, and Thul runes. The Flail is the most suitable base weapon for HOTO due to its 41 STR requirement.

Heart_of_the_Oak_weapon

Do you want your Nova Sorceress to obliterate any monster she encounters? Of course, you do! Invest your resources to obtain the Infinity runeword, specifically one that uses a two-handed Scythe as the base for its low STR requirement.

Infinity is often equipped by the Mercenary, but not in this particular scenario! Wielding Infinity yourself actually provides you with the means of reducing enemy lightning resistance by as much as 55%!

Additionally, this D2R runeword gives you a considerable increase in vitality, giving you peace of mind that you won’t die easily even if your mana and Energy Shield are completely depleted!

You won’t have Infinity in your possession until you have enough resources, though. That’s because it requires a couple of very expensive runes (Ber). The Ber rune, in case you don’t know, is one of the most expensive in Diablo II: Resurrected!

If you don’t want to wait that long and you want to use Infinity as soon as you hit level 63, then visit our D2R Store. We will have Infinity delivered to you shortly after making the purchase!

Shield

Assuming that you are wielding any of the one-handed weapons mentioned in this Nova Sorc D2R build guide, the shield that we can recommend depends on how much STR you’re willing to have on your character.

If you’re fine with the idea of spending enough points to equip a Monarch Shield, then you should definitely choose Spirit. This particular runeword can roll up to 35% FCR and 112 mana, which are useful stats for this build.

Aside from that, the 55% Faster Hit Recovery of the Spirit runeword allows you to aim higher and achieve the 86% FHR breakpoint for that 7-frame recovery animation after getting hit (down from 15 frames).

Additionally, Spirit grants 22 vitality, so if you’re conscious about your low health pool, then this runeword can help alleviate your worries.

Spirit_shield

The Monarch Shield’s 156 strength requirement is pretty high for a Sorceress who is better off spending those precious attribute points to improve vitality or energy. So, if you have the same philosophy, there is somewhat of a slim version of Spirit that you can use: the Lidless Wall.

What can the Lidless Wall provide for the Nova Sorceress? Well, apart from the skill increase and 20% FCR, this unique shield improves the mana pool of this build thanks to that 10% increased maximum mana and +10 Energy.

And we cannot stress this enough—the mana that you gain on kill is a modifier that is a godsend for this build. That is primarily due to the fact that you cannot leech mana from enemies. For the uninitiated, any form of leech in Diablo II: Resurrected only comes from physical damage attacks, so you cannot get mana from this mechanic since you’re using elemental spells.

It’s also a good thing that the Lidless Wall can be equipped as early as level 41!

Switch Weapon

The concept of weapon swap in Diablo II: Resurrected is to equip weapons and shields that provide certain bonuses that improve your buffs.

In the case of the Nova Sorceress, we advise you to use the Memory runeword as opposed to the conventional Call to Arms plus Spirit combo. Why is that?

Memory, especially when using a staff that already has +3 to Energy Shield, allows you to cast a pretty high-level ES. The runeword itself already grants a six-level increase, so when coupled with the said staff, that number goes to nine!

Raising the level of Energy Shield is crucial to your survival because every point the skill gets improves the amount of damage that gets transferred to mana instead of life. If you equip all of the recommended D2R items on this build guide, you will achieve at least 85% of damage being absorbed by mana, while the remaining 15% goes to life.

You do have the option of equipping the CTA and Spirit on weapon swap, but this necessitates that you place Memory inside your inventory for pre-buffing. However, this is a bit time-consuming. Nevertheless, the option is still there if you want this style of play.

Gloves

There is no denying that the D2R Nova Sorceress is a mana-intensive build. You not only lose mana by casting Nova numerous times, but you also diminish your mana when you get hit by the enemy.

Fortunately, the Magefist is available in the game. These gloves provide you with a 25% increase in mana regeneration, which is improved even further by the Sorceress’ Warmth passive skill. The 20% FCR should give you a good boost, allowing you to reach that 105% breakpoint for Faster Cast Rate without much thought.

Boots

The choice of boots for the Nova Sorceress depends on whether you want to dabble in crafting or not. If you like to go with the “set-and-forget” approach, then choose the Sandstorm Trek.

As mentioned earlier, poison damage bypasses energy shield in Diablo II: Resurrected. Since you only have so much HP, getting poisoned is a huge no-no for the Nova Sorceress!

The Sandstorm Trek is a pair of boots that grant up to 70% resistance to poison, so it is wise to get the perfect roll for maximum protection against this damaging ailment!

Sandstorm_Trek_boots

How about the second option? Well, you will need to craft some caster boots using a particular Horadric Cube recipe. Get a normal rarity Demonhide Boots and place them inside the Horadric Cube, along with a single Thul rune, Perfect Amethyst, and jewel (of any kind).

The bonuses that you want on the boots include poison resistance, reduced length of poison, and some mana modifiers.

Amulet

Having a high amount of FCR is always a good thing for any Sorceress build in Diablo II: Resurrected. Hence, we recommend that you get a rare amulet with +2 skills and at least 10% FCR. You can also obtain one that has some poison resistance.

Rare_amulet_with_FCR

If you’ve already reached the 105% FCR breakpoint, then you can opt for a +3 to lightning skills amulet instead. This is to help you attain a level 40 Energy Shield, which allows 95% of damage to be taken from mana!

+3_lightning_skills_amulet

Rings

We normally do not recommend that you wear the same ring for a particular Diablo II: Resurrected build, but for the Nova Sorceress, we will make an exception!

The Stone of Jordan, with its 25% IMM and +20 flat mana, increases your mana pool significantly. Imagine wearing two of them at the same time!

Aside from that, the +2 skills from a couple of SOJs contribute to achieving the coveted level 40 Energy Shield.

Belt

Increasing the mana pool by whatever means necessary is vital to the success of this Nova Sorc D2R build. Thankfully, there is a belt that gives just what you need: the Arachnid Mesh.

Charms

  • Annihilus: Must have +20 attributes and +20 all-resists
  • Hellfire Torch: +20 attributes, +20 all resistances, and +3 to Sorceress Skill Levels
  • Gheed’s Fortune: Aim for the full 40% Magic Find since you only have a limited MF on this build
  • Sunder Charm – Crack of the Heavens: Allows you to deal with monsters that have lightning immunity
  • Small Charms: Lightning resistance and Magic Find
  • Grand Charms: +1 to Lightning Skills and Life

Mercenary

Among the damage types that exist in Diablo II: Resurrected, poison should be avoided like the plague! But, what should you do if you’ve been poisoned by the enemy? How will you survive when that happens?

The Nova Sorceress will have to rely on her trusty mercenary who is equipped with the aptly named Cure. This D2R runeword grants the hireling a level 1 Cleansing Aura that reduces poison duration by 39%.

Visit our D2R Store

Don’t take the measly 39% reduced duration at face value because Cleansing Aura actually works in pulses. Every two seconds, the said aura works to shorten the amount of time you will be affected by the damaging ailment! In other words, poison is only going to affect you for a very brief period!

Now, Cure is a runeword that is specifically reserved for helmets, and with no way to leech life from enemies due to the absence of Andariel’s Visage, how does your merc sustain himself out there?

That is where the Chains of Honor comes in. Besides the 8% life leech that CoH provides, this runeword boosts the resistances and damage reduction of your mercenary as well.

To ensure that you don’t get OOM (out of mana) in D2R while playing the Nova Sorceress, have your Act 2 Mercenary equipped with Insight. The Meditation Aura from this runeword works in tandem with the Sorc’s Warmth, as well as the mana regeneration from the Magefist.

Don’t forget to acquire the services of an Act 2 Desert Hireling with the Prayer Aura. That is because his aura synergizes with the Cleansing Aura from Cure, providing you with 50 HP worth of healing per tick!

Here is the ideal gear for the Nova Sorceress mercenary in D2R Season 9:

  • Helmet: Cure
  • Body Armor: Chains of Honor
  • Weapon: Insight

Tips and Strategies

  • Have Mana on Kill Bonuses: You cannot leech life with lightning skills. Therefore, Mana on Kill modifiers on items will help you address the huge mana cost of Nova early on.
  • Get Frozen Armor to Improve Your Defense: If you are not satisfied with your current level of survivability, you can put some of the points from Thunder Storm and allocate it towards Frozen Armor. This skill not only gives you more defense but melee attackers will get frozen if they put their hands on you as well.
  • Replace Memory with CTA and Lidless Wall: Having a high-level Energy Shield is one thing that you can aim for in this D2R build. However, if you miss the life-and-mana-boosting effects of Call to Arms, then replace Memory with CTA and Lidless Wall completely. Although you lose some Energy Shield effectiveness, you gain more damage instead thanks to Battle Command.
  • Do Telestomping: This is a term that refers to a D2R technique, where you cast your primary skill immediately after using Teleport. Telestomping is a great way to ensure that your enemies receive the most damage possible with Nova.
  • Level Up Warmth When Needed: Although we only recommend that you spend one point on Warmth, it is an awesome passive skill to level up when you are not properly geared. This is considering how starved for mana the Nova Sorc can be. Of course, you’d have to reallocate points to the skills outlined in this D2R Nova Sorceress build guide, but do not be afraid to have a higher level Warmth just to help you sustain mana in the early game.
  • How to Obtain a Level 40 Energy Shield: If you really want to know how to raise the level of ES that high, you must equip the following items:

    • +9 ES Memory Staff
    • Magic Helmet with +3 to Lightning Skills
    • Ormus’ Robes specifically with +3 Energy Shield
    • Magic Amulet with +3 to Lightning Skills
    • Two Stone of Jordans (+2)
    • Arachnid Mesh (+1)

Final Thoughts

There is a reason why the Nova Sorceress is still popular in Diablo II: Resurrected Season 9. This build can destroy any monster in the game, including Ubers and the deadly cows in The Secret Cow level.

The D2R Nova Sorc is one that you can rely on when it comes to farming the Chaos Sanctuary on a consistent basis. She does not fear the elements, and although poison can hurt her, this ailment is easily cleansed by her well-equipped Mercenary.

So, if you are looking for a D2R build that you can use to farm whatever content there is available in the game, then make sure to put the Nova Sorceress at the top of your list!
