D2R Season 9: Fire Claws Druid Build Guide

Diablo 2: Resurrected , Game Guides
If there is one class in Diablo II: Resurrected that often gets overlooked, it would probably be the Druid. This is largely because the Druid is a tad slower compared to other classes, such as the Assassin, Amazon, and Barbarian. However, there is more to this shapeshifting hero than meets the eye!
The Fire Claws Druid is an exceptional build that is so powerful that it can take on whatever content there is in the game even in Players 8 difficulty! Whether you are playing solo or in a group, this D2R build is great for all occasions!
Why Choose the Fire Claws Druid?
The Fire Claws Druid (aka FC Druid) is a highly underrated build in Diablo II: Resurrected Season 9. This melee build was actually one of the most popular back in the day, but the reduced usage probably stems from a couple of key reasons.
In case you’re not aware, Fire Claws is now capped at 7 frames while in Werewolf Form. With a two-handed weapon that has a relatively good base damage and attack speed like the Thresher, the Fire Claws Druid could achieve four frames per attack (FPA). To put it simply, this class only needed four frames to initiate a single swipe using Fire Claws.
Nowadays, that number is raised to seven frames (six when using the Thresher). This means that the Fire Claws’ attack speed is a bit slower compared to what it was back then.
Another notable change that was made to Fire Claws is that its two synergies, Fissure and Volcano, no longer provide additional damage. This was compensated by increasing the base damage of the skill.
Blizzard made the adjustment to give Druid players more points to allocate to different skills. This is a net positive change because you can freely take more skills now than before at the cost of slightly reduced damage on the top end.
These are important things to mention because, despite the tweaks made to the skill over time, the D2R Fire Claws Druid is still an exceptional build that can output incredible amounts of damage. This is quite evident when you have the right D2R items equipped!
While Fire Claws is still viable in D2R Season 9, it only hits one enemy at a time. To help with AoE clear, this build also relies on Armageddon.
Armageddon causes meteors to rain down from the sky every 0.24 seconds (or six frames). You can increase the skill’s duration by putting more points on Fissure, but this is optional.
Playstyle
As a Druid, it is always a good idea to have your summons with you wherever you go. If you find summoning each one of them is cumbersome, then you can concentrate on the Oak Sage, Heart of Wolverine, and the Grizzly Bear. The first two boost your life, damage, and attack rating, while the Grizzly Bear is a potent meat shield that can give some protection against melee attackers.
For your main rotation, cast Armageddon before you hit enemies repeatedly with Fire Claws. This is so that the meteors will hit the monsters in your vicinity while you focus your attention on a single target.
You can invest more points in Fissure to greatly increase the duration of Armageddon if you want. This alleviates the need to cast Armageddon every so often. Alternatively, increasing the level of Volcano makes each meteor from Armageddon hit harder, so it is up to you what you want to achieve with the FC Druid.
Cyclone Armor is a huge part of your defenses, so make sure to recast it when needed. This gives you a protective barrier against elemental damage. Monsters that deal fire, cold, and lightning damage become more common in Hell Difficulty, making Cyclone Armor a must-have.
You are pretty much in Werewolf Form when playing the Diablo II: Resurrected Fire Claws Druid build. However, if you have the Metamorphosis equipped, you have to switch to Werebear every three minutes to gain Mark of the Bear.
Mark of the Bear is a temporary buff that grants additional attack speed and physical damage reduction. This makes it a perfect pair with Cyclone Armor as this combo provides you with physical, fire, cold, and lightning damage mitigation.
Stats
- Strength: 156
- Dexterity: 136
- Vitality: Spend the rest of the points here.
- Energy: None
If you are wondering why you need to invest some points in dexterity, it is to allow you to wield the Phase Blade. This assumes that you are going for the one-handed weapon + shield version of this build. If you don’t mind using slower two-handed weapons that hit hard, then remove the points on DEX and put it on vitality for more HP.
The larger health pool is actually needed here considering that you will be in Werewolf Form the vast majority of the time. Unless you are okay with the slower attack speed of the Werebear (because this form has more HP), all of your remaining points should be spent on VIT for a more robust Werewolf.
Skills
- 20 points on Fire Claws
- 20 points on Armageddon
- 20 points on Firestorm
- 20 points on Molten Boulder
- 12 points on Fissure
- 5 points on Volcano
- Put 1 point on the following skills:
- Werewolf
- Lycanthropy
- Werebear
- Maul
- Feral Rage
- Raven
- Oak Sage
- Heart of Wolverine
- Summon Spirit Wolf
- Summon Dire Wolf
- Summon Grizzly
The removal of two synergistic skills for Fire Claws now allows the D2R FC Druid more points to spend on other abilities. That’s why if you have played this build prior to Diablo II: Resurrected Season 9, you will find that this version now has points allocated to summons and Cyclone Armor.
We put at least 12 points on Fissure to increase the duration of Armageddon from 10 seconds to 34 seconds. This is a major quality-of-life change since you do not need to cast the skill quite frequently anymore.
The five points on Volcano is to boost the damage of Armageddon. However, you can remove several skill points from that and add them to Fissure for another eight-second increase in Armageddon duration!
While leveling your Druid, transform into a Werewolf and use Feral Rage whenever you need to recover some HP. Firestorm and Molten Boulder are complementary skills that improve your clear speed, especially early on.
Summon all of your minions to provide you with additional damage and survivability. Recast Grizzly Bear when needed as it can protect you from damage.
Breakpoints
The IAS (Increased Attack Speed) breakpoint is one of the things that you need to address on this Fire Claws Druid D2R build. This breakpoint is rather complex because you have to take into account plenty of constants. For instance, the attack speed bonuses from gear vary largely depending on whether you are in human form or Werewolf form.
Let’s say that you are wielding a Phase Blade while being a Werewolf, you must have 60% IAS throughout your gear in order to attain the ideal 7 frames per attack (or FPA). If you use the two-handed Giant Thresher, you need about 50% IAS from other sources just to achieve the same thing. If you need assistance, utilize this convenient D2R IAS calculator specifically for Werewolf Druids.
Faster Cast Rate is still needed so that pre-buffing does not take needlessly long to accomplish. About 68% will do for the FC Druid without sacrificing a lot of other useful stats on gear.
Faster Hit Recovery is not required for this D2R build, though having a little bit can help improve survivability. Getting 42% FHR should do the trick!
Fire Claws Druid Gear Recommendations
The FC Druid enjoys a lot of flexibility on certain pieces of gear. For example, there are four different helmets this build can use, and all of them are pretty awesome! Having said that, you should prioritize getting IAS, life, and some resistances when looking at suitable D2R items for this build.
Helmet
Fire Claws deal massive amounts of fire damage, so it works well with items that can reduce the enemy’s resistance to the said damage type. The Ravenlore is a unique item that does that pretty well. This particular helmet can reduce monster fire resistance by as much as 20%!
Ravenlore also benefits you by raising the level of your elemental skills by a few points. This, in turn, makes Fire Claws hit harder due to its synergy with Firestorm and Molten Boulder.
If you’re not satisfied with the item’s innate -20% to the enemy’s fire resistance, you can improve that by socketing a Rainbow Facet: Fire. Head to our D2R store to get it for a cheap price!
At some point, you are going to put the Flame Rift sunder charm in your inventory to break monster immunity against fire damage. While this unique GC aids you in killing monsters effectively using Fire Claws, it does have a downside of significantly reducing your fire resistance as well.
That’s why some FC Druid players swear by the use of Flickering Flame—a D2R runeword that greatly increases resistance to fire damage thanks to a level 4-8 Resist Fire aura. On a perfect roll (level 8), you gain an additional 106% fire resistance, effectively nullifying the negative aspect of Flame Rift!
Aside from that, Flickering Flame reduces enemy fire resistance by up to 15%. This is similar to Ravenlore, albeit at a slightly reduced effectiveness. Be that as it may, the level 8 Resist Fire aura provided by this runeword is quite useful in Hell Difficulty, so the trade-off is acceptable.
If you are opting for the Flickering Flame, make sure that you get a Druid-only helmet that has +3 to Fire Claws. This bonus carries over even when you insert the Nef, Pul, and Vex runes into it.
Do you want to raise the level of Fire Claws by eight just by wearing a single piece of gear? That is possible when you use a Druid helmet with +3 Fire Claws and put the Metamorphosis runeword into it!
Metamorphosis is not only used for that purpose, though. This particular D2R runeword grants a couple of buffs that can only be accessed while shapeshifted.
To maximize the build, you have to turn into a Werebear every three minutes and use Maul to gain Mark of the Bear. The increased attack speed helps you achieve the necessary IAS breakpoints for maximum Fury Claws damage.
In addition, Metamorphosis gives you access to Crushing Blow. This mechanic takes off a chunk of your enemy’s HP while you’re hitting them with Fire Claws. The only thing missing from this otherwise stellar Druid helmet is the fire resistance reduction granted by the prior two options. Still, it’s worth the investment!
Jalal’s Mane is the least effective helmet for the D2R Fire Claws Druid yet it still warrants an inclusion in this build guide. The reason is that it provides a good amount of FHR, resistances, and STR/VIT. Not to mention that it raises the level of Shapeshifting Skills by four!
To make it count, insert a Rainbow Facet: Fire for some additional fire skill damage, as well as reduced enemy fire resistance.
Body Armor
Hustle is a popular early-level D2R runeword that is typically used on weapons for that literal burst of speed. Although that is the typical use-case, Hustle can be socketed into armor as well.
If you place the Shael, Ko, and Eld runes into suitable body armor with impeccable base defenses, you will gain an insane boost to run/walk speeds. More importantly, you will enjoy a 40% increase in attack speed, allowing you to swipe enemies with Fire Claws more frequently. And oh, did we mention that this body armor runeword is available at level 39?
Some say that there are vastly better options than Fortitude on an FC Druid build, and they are correct to some extent. However, we feel that Fortitude is incredible, especially when paired with a particular shield runeword. This will be discussed later on in this D2R Fire Claws Druid build guide.
So what does the Fortitude runeword have that is great for this build? Well, it can roll up to 300% Enhanced Damage, which improves the DPS of Fire Claws. This is even more so when factoring ED from other sources!
On top of that, this thing grants a significant increase to defense, and a large part of that is from the level 15 Chilling Armor. It also gives you 25% FCR, which can help you with gearing if you want to hit the ideal FCR breakpoint for this build.
Even though Fire Claws is a melee skill that deals elemental damage, it still leaves a bit of physical damage intact for you to leech life from your enemies. It is not as effective as a true physical damage skill like Maul but it should be serviceable enough for you to survive in the higher difficulty levels.
That said, Chains of Honor is another amazing body armor for the FC Druid, mainly for its damage-boosting effects against demons and the undead. Besides that, the 8% life leech, 65% all-resists, and a slight reduction in physical damage are welcome bonuses defensively.
If you are into Magic Find bonuses, CoH’s 25% MF is not much, though it still adds up when you have other MF-increasing items.
Weapon
Just like the helmets, there are several viable weapons that the Fire Claws Druid can use. All of them are pretty good, so it’s just a matter of preference on which one you will ultimately use.
Let’s begin with the one-handers first. The Grief runeword placed on a Phase Blade provides more oomph with each use of your Fire Claws ability. Trash mobs will have their defense reduced to nothing, while Uber Bosses suffer from a 25% reduction when attacking with this particular weapon runeword.
Grief is also best paired with Fortitude because of its flat added damage. The 300% ED from Fortitude works really well with this weapon, especially when you’re able to get Grief’s maximum 40% IAS roll!
The Hand of Justice is a surprising entry on this D2R build guide but it should be included for its various bonuses. Although its level 16 Holy Fire Aura is negligible due to the lack of synergistic skills, HoJ’s -20% enemy fire resistance is crazy good when paired with Flickering Flame or Ravenlore.
HoJ’s also grants the ability to blind monsters with each attack. Combine that with the runeword’s 33% increased attack speed and 330% Enhanced Damage, your enemies will never know what hit them!
Now onto two-handed weapons. Breath of the Dying, particularly on a Thresher or Giant Thresher, is one of the best weapons a Fire Claws Druid could ever have. Offensively, BoTD makes quick work of the enemy due to its incredible 60% IAS and 400% Enhanced Damage.
For survivability, you gain the ability to leech life and mana with each hit. Although they’re not as pronounced given that you’re utilizing Fire Claws as your main skill, having the ability to leech from monsters is still welcome nevertheless.
Since Breath of the Dying has that indestructible property, you might as well use an Ethereal Thresher/Giant Thresher as the base to get the most out of it.
Do you have the Ravenlore equipped? Maximize the unique effect of the said helmet by wielding the Obedience runeword as well! This thing also reduces the enemy’s fire resistance, allowing you to carve a hole on the enemy’s chest with your fiery claws! That is not the only reason why Obedience is a viable option for this build.
Obedience also provides additional fire damage and a huge boost to attack rating via its level 21 Enchant proc. The bonus AR is significant because melee builds like the FC Druid can benefit from it. As they say, every hit counts when playing a melee character in Diablo II: Resurrected!
Other than the things that have already been mentioned, Obedience also grants 40% Crushing Blow, 40% FHR, and -25% to target defense.
Shield
Did you drown out all the noise and equip Fortitude as we told you to? If so, you can pair that with Grief on the main hand and a Monarch Shield with the Phoenix runeword attached to it on the off-hand.
Phoenix works really well with the FC Druid because its level 22 Firestorm proc deals more damage due to its natural synergy with Molten Boulder and Fissure. That’s not all! This runeword reduces the fire resistance of your enemies by 28%, thus amplifying the effect of Ravenlore or Flickering Flame!
Now, why is Phoenix and Grief the ideal pairing for the Fire Claws Druid? Remember that Grief has a flat damage bonus. That is greatly amplified by the 400% ED from Phoenix! If you factor in the Enhanced Damage bonus from Fortitude, you will have a character that deals absurd amounts of fire damage as a result!
Weapon/Shield Swap
Call to Arms Weapon and Spirit Shield: This is a combination in D2R that stood the test of time. CTA and Spirit are often used as a means of increasing the level of your skills when pre-buffing. That’s why you switch to these items whenever you’re summoning your pets and buffing with Battle Command and Battle Orders.
Gloves
LoH or Laying of Hands is widely used by melee Druid builds in D2R Season 9. There is no better substitute for these gloves other than achieving a higher FCR breakpoint. Besides its 20% IAS, the additional 50% bonus to fire resistance helps address the penalty of using the Flame Rift GC.
If you still need a bit of FCR, go for a Magefist. Take note that you are sacrificing quite a lot of damage when wearing this over LoH, so you have to decide if you want more Faster Cast Rate or better DPS.
Boots
Gaining the ability to inflict Open Wounds, Deadly Strike, and Crushing Blow is more important for the Fire Claws Druid than any bonuses to Magic Find. Hence, the Gore Rider is the perfect choice for the boots!
Amulet
Highlord’s Wrath is unbeatable on the Diablo II: Resurrected Fire Claws Druid for a couple of reasons. For one, this thing allows you to hit the ideal IAS breakpoint for 7 FPA Fire Claws easily. Moreover, the +1 to skills of Highlord’s Wrath is essential in improving the damage of Fire Claws and Armageddon.
Achieving a healthy amount of resistances is crucial for surviving the D2R Hell Difficulty. If you lack resistances in certain areas, a well-rolled Mara’s Kaleidoscope can address that. Although you do not get 20% IAS when using this amulet, it does raise the level of your skills by two, so it’s not as bad as you think damage-wise.
Rings
Metamorphosis grants freeze immunity when worn. If you decide to wear other helmets, you have to gain CBF somehow. Fortunately, that can be rectified by wearing the Raven Frost in one of your ring slots.
Use the other ring slot to sort out any issues you might have with the D2R Fire Claws Druid. A dual leech ring with some resistances is the best, though you can have some attack rating and STR on here as well.
Belt
A staple in many PvP builds in D2R Season 9, Verdungo’s Hearty Cord is a great option for PvM purposes too! The +40 VIT and 15% physical damage reduction work really well with this class. The bonus to maximum stamina also helps since you’re going to find yourself running most of the time while playing the FC Druid.
String of Ears might not give you a huge boost in HP, but what it does offer is 8% life leech and 180% ED. Besides that, this is the only D2R belt that grants reductions in both physical and magic damage.
Charms
- Hellfire Torch: +3 to Druid Skills, +20 attributes
- Annihilus: +1 to skills and +20 all-resists
- Gheed’s Fortune: Preferably with 40% MF
- Sunder Charm: Flame Rift
- Small Charms: Resistances and Magic Find
- Grand Charms: +1 to Shapeshifting Skills and Magic Find
Mercenary
The Act 2 Mercenary with Might Aura is a good ally to the Fire Claws Druid. The said aura boosts the damage of your primary skills. Equip your hireling with a well-rolled Infinity so that you can also benefit from it.
Infinity’s Conviction Aura reduces the fire resistance of enemies within the vicinity of the mercenary by 85%. Although this is not as effective in Hell Difficulty, any reductions in fire resistance are still welcome.
Anyway, here is the ideal gear for your Act 2 Might Aura Mercenary:
- Weapon: Infinity
- Helmet: Andariel’s Visage (with 15% IAS Jewel)
- Body Armor: Fortitude or Treachery
Tips and Strategies
Put Flame Rift in Your Inventory: Blizzard has done a good job of providing players with the means of defeating enemies with immunity to certain damage types via sunder charms. This is very much the case for the D2R Fire Claws Druid. In case you don’t know, you will come across a bunch of fire-immune monsters in the endgame, so having the Flame Rift sunder charm in your inventory allows you to quickly deal with them.
Enigma is Fine: The Fire Claws Druid is a build that can utilize Enigma, though you have to keep in mind that you cannot use Teleport while you’re in Werewolf or Werebear Forms. This D2R runeword is still quite useful even without Teleport because of its +2 skills, 45% FRW, and a high MF bonus. The only reason why we did not include this in the body armor section of the build guide is that it requires Jah and Ber, two of the most expensive runes in the game. Fortitude and Chains of Honor are better overall for the FC Druid relative to the cost of investment.
Try Hustle on Weapon Swap: Hustle is a D2R runeword that can be inserted into weapons and armor. The beauty of putting Hustle into a weapon is that you gain the effects of a level 1 Burst of Speed, such as 21% IAS and 23% FRW. If you want to min-max the Fire Claws Druid, you can incorporate Hustle on weapon swap just to gain its buffs.
Act 5 Mercenary with Plague: Don’t get this the wrong way—the Act 2 Mercenary is already quite good, especially when he’s wielding an Infinity polearm. However, an A5 Barb Mercenary with the Plague runeword is a viable alternative. Plague enables the wielder to cast a level 12 Lower Resist spell, which reduces the elemental resistance of affected monsters by 57%. This is still lower than Conviction Aura’s 85% (from Infinity) but another thing that’s going for the Plague runeword is its level 12 Cleansing Aura. This significantly reduces poison and curse duration on you, thus improving your survivability in P8 content.
Use Feral Rage for a Quick Top-Up: Feral Rage is an incredibly useful skill for life leech. If you feel that the hybrid damage of Fire Claws results in a slower life recovery (from leech), then you can spam Feral Rage to top your HP up fast.
Final Thoughts
The Wind Druid is arguably the most-played Druid build in Diablo II: Resurrected Season 9. However, the Fire Claws Druid makes a strong case, so much so that it can take away the crown from the Wind Druid when given the proper equipment!
Armageddon and Fire Claws provide you with a potent combination of fire-based skills that can obliterate the minions of Hell with ease. Despite what others may think about the adjustments made to Fire Claws, the said skill is quite powerful.
Furthermore, Fire Claws has made Werewolf popular again in D2R Season 9. You lose a bit of survivability when in this form, but you gain a huge bonus in attack rating and attack speed, which is a fair compromise.
The only downside of this build is that you have to be at melee range to get the most out of your main damage dealers. Other than that, there’s nothing to be ashamed of when using FC!
So, there you have it! We hope that you’ve enjoyed our Diablo II: Resurrected Fire Claws Druid build guide for Season 9! If you have any questions, feel free to post a comment below.
