Utility: An Andy Visage is the best choice of helm option for most mercenaries, especially if it's Ethereal. It's also one of the most useful helms for Bowazons due to the All Skills, IAS and high life steal.

Arreat's Face
Utility: Arreat's Face is an excellent helm for Barbarians both for it's offensive and defensive qualities. The overalll +4 to combat skills grant a big amount of damage, while the +2 Barbarian skills, the high defense, life steal, all resist, faster hit recovery and +stats make it one of the best Barbarian helm choices for survivability as well. If you have high enough strength, you can also upgrade it to Guardian Crown in order to gain higher defense.

Crown of Ages
Utility: Crown of Ages, or COA in short is the best helm of choice for survivability for almost all builds. It’s a highly suggested helm of choice for Hardcore players. Due to the 2 open sockets, it can also be utilised for offense by putting in jewels that increase damage.

Griffon's Eye
Utility: Griffon's Eye provides the biggest damage boost for any Lightning damage dealing builds due to its lightning damage boosting qualities and the very high faster cast rate boost. The downside of the helm is that it doesn’t have great defensive stats, so it’s not a great choice for Hardcore players for most builds.

Jalal's Mane
Utility: Jalal for Druids is what Arreat's Face is for barbarians. It has both excellent offensive and defensive qualities. The +4 to shape shifting skills and +20% attack rating boost damage output by a huge amount, while the FHR, stat and resistance bonuses provide great survivability.

Utility: Nightwing's Veil is the most useful helm for several Cold damage dealing builds, especially cold sorceresses. It’s probably not the best helm of choice for Hardcore, but if you are going for damage with your cold sorc, it’s your best option.

Harlequin Crest Shako
Utility: Harlequin Crest Shako, or Shako in short is the most infamous helm in the entire game. It has amazing defensive qualities while also boosting offense due to the +2 all skills. The helm has very unique qualities, it provides an unmatched amount of Life and Mana (1.5 per level), and has damage reduction which is a very rare but valuable stat on helms. For Magic Find, it is clearly the #1 choice for any build, but even in general it’s the best helm choice for plenty of builds, and literally every build in the game benefits from wearing it. Alongside COA, it is the best helm for Hardcore players.

For casters, the only amulets that can be more useful are rare and crafted ones with additional faster cast rate to help reach a higher attack frame rate.

Utility: Guardian Angel is a very special item, as it provides 15 maximum resist to all the resistances, while also having a great deal of defense, added faster block rate and increased block chance. It's safe to say that it is the single most defensive item in the entire game. The blocks and high defense helps againt melee attacks, while 90% all resistance is achievable by wearing it, making you almost invincible against elemental attacks. If you play hardcore, you should definitely try it, it’s a great fit for most builds!

Ethereal versions are very costly, but have a very high amount of defense. It can also be upgraded to a Balrog Skin, granting your character up to 2.3k defense. It’s safe to say that Skullder’s is the best sorceress magic find armors, but many other builds can benefit from it when used for magic finding.

Utility: Gerke's is a nice shield to have fun with.It's an average shield for defensive purposes, however with very special equipment that absorbs/reduces most damage taken, the 16 damage reduction, 18 magic damage reduction and 15 replenish life can make your character almost immortal in some instances.

Utility: Herald of Zakarum, or HOZ in short is the most popular paladin shield. It has awesome offensive and defensive qualities, as it provides an unrivalled +4 to combat skills with additional attack rating bonus, while having a very high chance to block, high defense, fast block rate, high stat bonuses and a very high all resistance bonus. Few shield can compete against it for any paladin build, Exile and Spirit can be a bit better depending on the build.

It is a must-have item in hardcore, and if you aim for the 50% physical damage reduction cap, it will require a stormshield for most builds. Stormshield can benefit almost any build that’s capable of wearing a shield, even casters are often found wearing it as a survivability boosting item.
